Mercury Transaction Services - applications
Iunderstand some of you have received the application forms from Mercury Transaction, and they are asking for copies of drivers licence, auto insurance etc. I have just spoke to Susan James, and you can ignore the request for the copy of your drivers licence etc.
Just send a copy of your commmission and a W9 and everything will be fine. All new applications won't be asking for those other items.
And when you do any signings for them, put an invoice in the package going back.

Now you tell me. I sent them a copy of my insurance and D.L. I usually receive a request for a D.L. copy, but never proof of insurance. I didn't have a problem sending it, though because this is probably a reputable company.

Sorry Dee I had not been aware of the requirement until a notary e-mailed and asked me was it OK for this company to be asking for these things. I called Susan James and discussed it with her, and then said I would post to the boards letting those who had apps. know those items were not required. I am sure your info is safe with them. (She was already rethinking this, as she had a moutain of paperwork <g>)

Thanks. It's okay. I didn't have a problem sending it to her as I'm sure they are a safe company if otherwise, I'm sure they wouldn't fall under your recommendation. Thanks again.

The problem I have with sending that information willy nilly in an open environment, is ID theft. It is due to the "monitoring" of all the open communications that is done that makes it so easy. For example, would you give someone your credit card number over the internet unless the site was at least a "secure" site? Probably not. Then why would you offer your driver license number, or your social security number on anything less?
And don't think that the telephone lines are safe either. I had a credit card number "lifted" because the vendor required the user to enter their cc number through the keypad. Well, it is so easy to decode the DTMF signals from a telephone touch pad and obtain the information. The same for fax machines. They use nothing but audio signals to transmit the image. Any fax machine "listening" can decode the signal and, voila, they have a copy of the document too!
It is imperative that we all protect our identity any way we can. Do not use your SSN in any of these contractor relationships. Get an EIN. If someone wants other personal information, they need to use a secure website (https at a minimum) or provide another method of obtaining it.
Granted, there is no absolutely secure method available generally for this information. But don't make it easy either.
I can't tell you how many faxes I get, unsolicited, from notaries who want work. They said everything but their high school transcript: driver license, SSN card, vehicle insurance card, etc.

You have to email them for an application. They are still having some e-mail problems, as my e-mails keep being returned but their IT man is looking into it.

Re: Mercury Transaction Services - applications - ONLINE
Use their "Contact Us" page to request an application be sent to you. That way, you can bypass their email glitch. (Hopefully)

Re: Mercury Transaction Services - applications - ONLINE
When you see a company name, always try the obvious URL - www.companyname.com - or simply do a google search, which again would yield the result you are looking for.
It works in this case, as well as many others - http://www.MercuryTransaction.com
