Stupid question?
At the very beginnin of Notarial wording, where it states:
State of Kansas, County ss:
This instrument was acknowledged.....
What does "ss" stand for? I've always inserted the county name right after the state and I've never been told that it's a mistake. But today I received a doc with sample. It lists the county name after the "ss". Which is correct?

It is the abbreviation for a Latin phrase which I believe means "to whit".

So the county name should be written before "County ss:" not after. Correct?

Actually
The letters "SS." are an abbreviation for the Latin word "scilicet," which means "namely," or "more particularly described as."

Becky- If asked honestly there is no such thing as a stupid question. There are however, plenty of stupid answers. Fortunately none in response to your question. You denigrate yourself when you use that as the subject of your post.

Tom tells Becky:
***If asked honestly there is no such thing as a stupid question.***
Don't believe him, Becky. There are plenty of stupid questions. Just a few:
"Is this a stupid question?"
"Does PAW know everything?" (The answer: Of course he does, twit!)
"Will CaliNotary win the title of Mr. Congeniality for this forum?"
Is Hugh Nations the most arrogant a**hole that ever posts here?"

"Is this a stupid question?" YES
"Does PAW know everything?" (The answer: Of course he does, twit!)
"Will CaliNotary win the title of Mr. Congeniality for this forum?" YES, if he is the only one allowed to vote.
Is Hugh Nations the most arrogant a**hole that ever posts here?" This one has a pretty self-evident answer.
Yep Hugh, you most definitely asked some stupid ones!!!!!!

If I were doing a signing in Old Saybrook, which is in Middlesex County, the entry would be
State of Connecticut, Middlesex County, ss: Old Saybrook
Does that help?
The only stupid question is the unresearch / unasked question!
