Whose advice I read
Here are the folks I find to be helpful on this forum:
Chicago Bob-IL: To the point...posts little...too busy...makes useful items out of duct tape in his spare time.
SylviaFL: English version of Southern Lady, likes dogs, won 1st place in tire changing contest in high school.
PAW-FL: Super Geek, Super Notary (Probably a closet Mensa.)
HisHughness-TX: Retired lawyer, ret'd editor, ret'd academic, writer of sonnets, dancer, liberal; seeks widow with trust fund and bass boat.
Ted-MI: Lawyer, single, good tan, good-looking. Very polite. Women leave him for bikers who call them "My Old Lady."
CaliNotary-CA: Astute, sense of humor, ego intact...thinks yours should be, too--get therapy if not. Lies about his age. Excellent speller.
sue-PA: sue is short and to the point...hates to be wrong as much as I do. Therefore, she won't be. No warm fuzzies...pound sand if you don't like it.
Bobbi-CT: Real dang smart, edgy in a good way.
Janet-CA: Ditto
Carolyn-CO: Detail person. Trains lawyers using crate method.
Jon-CA: The tax man, knows the notary rules; don't ask Jon about the NNA; has CA Jurat tattoo on right shoulder.
Melody: Man trainer; has messy house/empty fridge at end of month.
Charm-AL: Positive thinker. Does not have fat arms. Good hygiene.
Ernest-CT: In charge of state abbreviation appearing after poster's name. Sells cheat notes to SA tests on black market.

Syl,
We've got to get you back into Southern ASL Classes!!
Lawks=English Lawsy=Southern
BTW, how common are nannies in English society?

Reply by Sylvia_FL on 4/13/05 9:17pm Msg #31624
Among the Rnglish "Society" they are common, but not among your normal everyday English homes.
Oh - and Brenda, the only thing I detest is being called "Syl"
I will let it slip by this once, but please remember it is the one thing I hate.

Thanks Brenda I don't know why, but that has always bothered me. My husband cringes when he hears someone call me Syl, as he knows how much I hate it.

Re: Never again. Sorry. n/m
Texans (maybe all) are big on recreating a name...nicknames. (Notice Hugh calls me BrenBren, my family called me Pete or Dinky.)
If you do this enough, no one notices when you call them the "wrong" name-- there is no wrong name.

No, she cannot call me Mumsie, because I am too young to be her Mumsie, but she can always call you Popsie, as you are of that great age to be a Popsie to both of us

Oh how you dream, my darlin'. Why do women have to be so vain about their age? I am proud to be the age I am. It took me a long time to get here, dammit, and no one is going to take away the memories, experience and knowledge that I accumulated on the trek.

True story:
Another notary and I had a conversation during hurricanes wherein yours/Sylvia's name came up.
The other notary said, "You know that Sylvia is Paul's daughter. She calls him Pops. "

You are the second person who has said this to me this week. As Sylvia knows, this is one of the characteristics of a Southern Lady.

Thanks for the reference, Brenda!
Perhaps I should offer Man Training by the hour.
I DO understand men.
I DO NOT choose to live with one.
My dog and I are fine, thank you.
"Messy house at EOM." Yes. I confess to that. Love those checks 10 days later, though!

Original Purpose of this was really for newbies...
Since we are promoting they read the forum archives, it might be helpful if they know some of the folks that have been around for awhile. I am going to remove those who are newer than I am, the real list of the ones I learned from on this forum:
Chicago Bob-IL SylviaFL PAW-FL HisHughness-TX sue-PA Bobbi-CT: Janet-CA Carolyn-CO Jon-CA Margaret-FL
(Margaret did not make the earlier list because she just won't dish quite enough to know how to describe her on this forum. However, she's got a lot of experience in inspections.)

Re: Original Purpose of this was really for newbies...
Brenda - We were thinking along the same lines tonight. I started a blog that I hope to post at some point in time.
I spent some time tonight re-reading old posts and got to wondering, what ever happened to:
Derrick/MT Gracie Mike McHenry redonthehead Lawrence Goodwin Tess/ME
And last , but certainly not least, Richard Silver.
Yes, even I miss the little twit. His posts were always entertaining unlike some of the drivel I've seen here in the past four months.
The NotRot board used to be fun, educational and entertaining. Now, the board has too many basic questions and bickering back and forth. You have to weed through so much crap to get to the good stuff. I miss the days when we would discuss the tough issues and questions. I miss the challenge.
Love ya, Hun
BTW, I may have been raised in CA, but I "grew up" in the South!

Re: Original Purpose of this was really for newbies...
Yes! Good ones.
Blog...That's what I was thinking. I had already posted my original list on my brendatx.blogspot.com blog.
Becca, My approach was so different than the new arrivals these last few months. Before I ever posted my first time or first question I read enough info to figure out the questions I needed to ask. I have been astounded that so many say:
Tell me how to do this. --- My view...it's impossible to tell people. But perhaps they do not know this. I have a theory that there is a culture problem...a generation problem, and this is why we are having trouble communicating.
*First and Middle Generation* There are those of us who naturally migrated into something that fit our background and we did not take classes--there were none, or when there were classes to take, we knew enough not to feel we needed them, we found our own answers to add to our background/experience.
Either way we did the learning/business building on our own. We made a natural transition into a job that fit us, we understand (from experience/background) you have to build relationships, gain respect, and be willing to do your time in our business. There is no point of "arrival."
We came from the law office, the title co., the lending sector, the real estate agencies. Or, we were already of an entrepreneurial nature and had that to move us forward into Google until the wee hours of the morning.
*New Generation* Those who came to be NSAs as a result of a business opportunity/classes. These can apply themselves and learn, as well. But, they learned via class/books and don't have a "feel" for this stuff...they do not know what the First/Middle do by being in related industries before this.
So, when the New asks the First and Middle group questions, perhaps New assumes they are asking good questions because they have actually paid, finished a course and received a certificate. They are (in their mind) even with the others except for number of signings.
First and Middle group does not put a great deal of weight on the classes. New does not realize this is the case. New may be under the impression we all started out the same way and should surely understand they need help.
First/Middle believes in hard-wired networking/building relationships/quid pro quo...getting to know others before handing out all we know. We have always traded knowledge and contacts as favors...we gave/we got.
New does not realize this yet.
---------- I think there are two philosophies at work causing the friction.
It's not the fault of the New. I think they do not understand and have not realized the way this type of business operates.
But, it's also not the responsibility of the First/Middle to continue to support the unrealistic expectations provided to the New.
We have a communication breakdown, perhaps?

About Duct Tape & Red Green...OT
About Red Green...someone should write him about this one.
In the 2000 Elections I worked for the county -- I was one of the ladies saying "select a ballot, please." A young man came up and whipped open his wallet to fish around for his V.R. card.
The wallet was a very complicated one with compartments and it was completely made of duct tape. I started coughing to cover a laugh, and all I could say was "I like your wallet." He was very proud and serious when he said, "Thank you. My girlfriend made it for me in rehab."

Geez Brenda, I'm impressed. Between Comcast probs and exhausted from signings and obtaining three new client/attorneys who have decided to leave the big corporate world and go solo, each have hired me to set up their offices. I do have to admit that I am using the *crate method* on each of them. Thanks for including me on your list.
