2nd Paper Tray Necessary?

I'm looking to buy a Brother 4-in-1 (so that my faxes will also be laser printed and for the convenience of having everything in one machine). I priced two different 4-in-1's (Model MFC-8440 and MFC-7820N). The 8440 was about $100 cheaper but did not have the capacity for a 2nd paper tray. Therefore, I would have to pay $100 more (for the 7820N0 plus the cost of the paper tray!

I have done about 75 signings and I usually just print everything on legal paper. The other day I got one (PDF) that came up as letter size paper. (I even called the person who hired me and she agreed that all the pages were letter size.) Well, when I printed it, some pages were legal but since I had printed on letter, things ran off the page. (Had to have husband reprint the entire 103 pages document (twice--once for borrower) and run it to me at the signing!

My question is -- especially to people who have been doing this a while--just how important is having a second paper tray? Will most companies accept printing everything on legal?

I love having a 2nd tray. Convenience is worth it.

2nd Paper Tray for $100 .. go for it

If the cost is only $100 more, go for the second paper tray. As said before, the convenience is worth it.

I have a Brother 8440 and did purchase a second tray off of ebay. Using applications such as Word it does sense paper size but does not do so using Adobe. I still find the second tray a convenience. When I print out documents in legal I can then go back & print the few pages that should be letter without changing trays. I would recommend that you make sure that it will print documents from pdf files automatically sensing the paper size.

Adobe works fine on the 8440

I have the 8440 and I can print adobe fine, will pick up what ever paper it needs. After you hit print, and the it opens up, make sure that the box "Chose paper source by PDF size is checked" before you hit "O.K."

Also, make sure that you have the trays identified

Oops. Anyway, also make sure that you have the trays identified correctly in the printer preferences in control panel. I have had no problems printing the two sizes from any program the companies have used once I got everything set up properly.

Having a 2nd paper tray does not gurantee that the documents will be printing correctly. You need to do a little research to make certain the printer you choose has the capability to auto determine the paper size & print appropriately. You also want to make certain the machine you choose prints at leas 21+ pages per minute.

I realize these machines are expensive, but with a proper warranty and maintenance plan, it should last you a very long time.

Brother 8220

I have an 8220 in which I am thinking about buying a second paper tray. Anyone have problems with auto determining paper size using Adobe or any other format? Any other problem?

Re: purchase of 2nd Paper Tray

Just go to "google". When I was looking for mine I just put "brothers 8440 paper tray". I found one that was $70.00 cheaper than what brothers were selling it for. Works great.

I have a Brother 1440, single tray and print all in legal size. Have done over 150 email signings and never had a problem with the SS/Lender/Title company by printing all in legal.

Many counties in California and some other states will reject the Deed of Trust and any other deeds if not on letter size. I learned this from experience. Besides, letter paper is cheaper than legal and more sales seem to be run on letter size paper. Some loan packages print more than 50% letter. It's more professional to print on the two sizes. That just make the difference on how many calls you get from title companies. I know a few major title companies won't call anyone who does not have a double tray printer.
