Asked to Notarize....

I've been asked to notarize a copy of an appraisal on a foreclosed property. The reason being is the property is supposedly being listed with a realtor for significantly less than the value and the debt. The previous owner thinks there is some legal avenues open to him and would like an acknowledgement of true copy. I can't find anything on this.

Review the part VII of your manual... it says A notary public has no authority to certify a copy of a public record, a publicly recorded document, a school record or diploma, a proffesional license, or any other publick or private document or record which does not pertain to the notary public's official acts.

Once, I was asked to notarize the copy of the bwr's drivers license. I politely declined and explain my reasons.

Hope this can help you.

Yes, I did read part VII. I knew I could not certify a copy of a public record, but wasn't sure if an appraisal fell into this category...even though it's part of a mortgage. I have told the guy no. I really am not sure what he hoped to accomplish. I think he should speak with an attorney if he has legal questions.
Thanks for your help.

While YOU can't certify the actual copy, you could notarize a statement by HIM that it was a true copy.
