My brother is a revenue agent with the IRS. He says agents are constantly making jokes about H & R Block and their lack of knowledge. Maybe you should try a different grade of courses.

Sorry! Yes I took the course many years ago and its the best in the field.
Their software is very good. If you take the course you will learn all the basics and learn it very good.
Some people will make jokes about hrblock, but because uses so many newbies and they recruit new people every year, but when I was there we have corrected tax returns from CPA's

I think its worth it, I dont know who does your taxes, but after that course you can start doing your own taxes and somebody else's.

IRS is the Joke
Call the IRS 3 times with the same question. Chances are, you may possibly get 3 different answers. I'm a tax professional, and I took the H & R Block course many years ago. At that time, it was a very good course.

H&R Block has the best tax course out there. They give it to train for new employees. Having your taxes done by them I don't suggest but their course I do. They use to not charge because they were looking for help and other tax firms sent their employees. Then they started charging $25.00 for the book. Now I don't know what they charge.

Blocks classes are very good. and doing your own taxes using their software pays for the course. You'll be surprised how many of your acquaintances will ask tax questions when they find out you work for them.

Della, I took the H&R's class in 2000 and it was very good, and I think worth it. I never became a tax preparer...which is one of the things the class taught me...that I was not a "numbers" person. Still it gave me a good education on tax matters.

As a former IRS tax examiner..
The way you are trained for preparing taxes is to get the Pub 17, which gives you an overview of what could possibly be found in a 1040 individual with the appropriate schedules. The information that is supplied (by the taxpayer) and your software is all you really need, but you must be up on the if/then scenarios.
I used to prepare taxes and the one liabilty in doing the process, was the people, normally they will not bring you all of their W-2, transpose the ssn of their dependents, give the wrong bank account for the direct deposit of refund, or not respond when they receive the notices from the IRS. It drives me bonkers and I get tired of parsing what the taxpayer's responsibilty is as a furnisher of information and my responsibility in preparing their information.
Also, do note that in order to be a tax preparer in CA, their are hours and certain licenses required. Check out California State requirements for tax preparers.

I'm one more in the long list of people who took the H & R Tax classes. My class had a great instructor, and I think that is a big point. I learned a tremendous amount in the class, and it does satisfy the state of California's tax-preparer certification training requirement. I've been a certified tax preparer since 2000 and do NOT work for H & R Block. I work on my own, and do very well. I think the classes are well worth the expense.

I have heard only good things about the course, and I was thinking about going for it as well. Like anything, it's what you put into it. Good luck!
