Is this really so strange?
I make a point of never contacting a borrower until I have docs in hand. The reasoning for this is: --I live in a very rural state, odd are I'm going to see the borrowers again in some other capacity --If/when a signing falls through, I am the face that is put with the bad experience --I have had many signings get cancelled at the last possible minute because of problems with documents
What do y'all think?

I contact them as soon as I can. I explain that I am waiting of the docs and have no control over the time they will arrive (e-doc). I set up tentative time and find out what their window of time is to do the signing. This gives me some flexibility. If docs are early, I may move the closing up, still in their window.

I like to contact the borrower right away and confirm an appointment time. I learned the hard way, never print documents out until you have an appointment set with the borrowers. Saves a lot of toner and paper!

Additionally, contacting the borrowers right away gives you an opportunity to explain that as the notary signing agent, you have no direct part of the entire process and that you don't work directly for the lender.

Even thou I am in CA I am also in a very rural area. I contact as soon as possible. The more conversation, the more positive impression you will leave, especially if you are explaining that you are also waiting for the docs, etc. I did a 2nd signing for a couple yesterday, who cancelled their first loan and requested me to do the 2nd signing. People understand that we have nothing to do with the documents if you explain it correctly.
