Just a comment
I don't normally post comments on how my day goes, but after reading some of the posts below and being tired and punchy, I counld not help myself.
I was not going to take any jobs today as Its been a while since I have had a day to myself. But, one of my good loan companies called me with a problem. They wanted me to go over to a signing where the notary that was there had the customers in a tizzy. The docs were so screwed up that I had to print new ones (I can receive and print docs in my truck) and start over again. Needless to say, I sent that notary packing. He will probably write a complaint on this board on how unprofessionally that I treated him. Well I was able to calm the customer down and get the signing done when another one of my regulars called me with a notary no show / no call after the initial appointment. Once again I printed new docs and completed the signing.
What's my point? Hell, I don't really know except I hear a lot of complaining out there about how slow it is and perhaps things are slowing down. But here I am, retired from my retail job of 38 years, began doing this to keep busy and figured I would do the overflow signings during the end of the month and fish, golf, work on the house the rest of the month. My wife is somewhat younger and cannot retire for a while longer. I have done very little in the way of advertising and I have all the work I can handle. Why? Perhaps they trust me, perhaps they know my job and get it done the first time correctly. Perhaps I am lucky.
Title and loan compaines are having a lot of problems getting the documents signed correctly and when they find someone reliable, that notary gets called whenever possible even if a travel fee is charged. Their words, not mine. I do very little work for signing companies now. The lenders and tc's call me direct. And all I did was drop a couple of business cards in the return package early on.
So if things seem a little screwed up for you, do a little soul searching. Do you know the contents of your state handbook? Do you look at a problem signing as a burden or an opportunity to do a superior job? Do you look at edocs ad a pain in the neck or an opportunity that you can download and print anything? Notaries want respect, but it has to be earned.
Well, I guess that's it. Now it's your turn to hammer me, but remember that bailing out these other notaries, I made well above my normal per siging fee ......

Re: Just a comment *your post a must read for newbies*
No hammering here...You just set out the reason we are all struggling with faxbacks and hand holding by SS. Too many signings are screwed up by newbies that don't have any background in the industry, and want to take one day long course and make 100K a year.

Re: Just a comment, and now my 2 cents...
Glenn, Thanks for your comments. Rambling my thoughts on success which might go along with yours here...
Reliability is one thing for sure.
Also, knowing a notary stamp is supposed to serve a purpose and what. If you know the purpose then the rules are not so hard to figure out and remember/memorize.
I also find that being available all full- time is reportedly one of the perks.
Being thorough is important. Checking one's work is important.
Knowing what business you are in and knowing what your costs/cash flow is so you can work competitively but profit.
Staying in control of as many things as possible which affect your job is helpful.
(For instance, BE ON TIME. Dress like you are a company owner in the real est. industry/title industry. Have supplies on hand...AND, the debated topic of carrying my camera for photos of ID. I always get a photo if it is required. As you may know, I always have a camera for snapping pictures of ID or other docs because 70% of my people don't remember and I don't feel okay returning a package without it if the lender requested it...sure, they can fax it in, but I have been told by the lenders they'd rather I drop the package a day later so I can print the photo of the ID than to drop today and fax in ID tomorrow.
Title companies have said this is a lot of trouble to piece the file back together and it's a pita...so I do what I do to control as much of the events that influence my reputation as possible. Don't take my advice at face value. I am just sharing a theory that if you can control some events and activities a signing requires you are better off with more control than less.
I feel I have as good a business as I could have in Texas for my region so I think this was a good choice for me.
EDocs...do you even know what they cost you? Many of my buddies charge lots more for eDocs than I do. Depending on the client, and circumstance, I name an all inclusive price so I don't have to watch for the updated conf.
Sometimes, if the trip is long, I will cut my eDoc fee-that's all I will say here. It's how I do it and it works for me.
My set up is not even that fancy, but it does the trick. If you cannot do edocs, I'd change that to be ready. Since I recharge my cartridges it is not expensive as it is when you do it by buying new mfg cartridges. Spend as much as possible on your printer and copier and reap the benefits later. You don't need the finest business cards, or buggy to pull your mobile notary gear in...you don't need the best pens or paper to print on...nor the best SUV for best comfort. Rather, put more money into your notary equipment if you want to be a real business.
I am not a know it all notary who argues and tries to control the documents under the guise of ID issues that are being blown out of proportion.
Be aware that you CAN actually learn something about what you think you KNOW.
If you are interested in reading a vent on UNSOLICITED ADVISORS (aka know it alls, superior arrogant meddling jackas_es who are pretending that you are the greatest while they methodically start a dialogue of negative input and criticism...just one of many toxic people the notary meets.). I just put up an essay on my Notary Fringe site.
They feel they are far more equipped to tell me how to live my life than to leave it to my Hillbilly Texas Dumb___.... almost as if they are experts on living my life! LOL
