Mistakes

Could someone tell me where we can post notaries that make these mistakes on a continual:

1. Miss Signatures

2. Allow borrowers to change the face of the deed

3. Late showing up to the signing or No Show

4. Rude to borrowers

5. Print cut off documents and go to the signing with them

6. Do not read the instructions and sign docs completely wrong

7. Send docs back to the wrong title company

8. Must I go on..

Please help me out on this...

Need to know,

I am wondering what you are really asking. My questions to you are:

1. Why are you hiring inexperienced notaries?

2. Why do you keep hiring the same notaries that make your list of mistakes?

3. Why are you not hiring experienced notaries and pay them accordingly?

I can not believe with thousands of notaries you can not find several GREAT ones. Remember.... you get what you pay for.

I have looked at your list and I can honestly say I have NEVER made these mistakes and nor did I even when I was new.

Seeing you asked for help I will extend to you some. Read the above 3 questions and answer them. If they do not apply then ask yourself what you are not doing when you are contracting a new notary.

I have personally have never been questioned about my skills or abilities or even how long or how many signings I have completed. The one thing I do receive is a list of ways my pay will be deducted for items of value then there are those if you do not call after confirming apts., after you arrive at an appointment, during the appointment, after the signing, when you get home and have faxed back 20 pages, ect.... When hiring in any position contact labor or not you need to find out about the person not how low you can pay them.

If you really needed help you would have posted your name as well as the company name, not hide behind a made up one.

I hope this helps!

Lori

Excellent response Lori!

You really got to the heart of the matter. I believe that much of this notary bashing by the singing services is strictly to benefit the signing services. That was a great resonse, a true calssic. I'm going to print it ou t and keep it in my archives.

Best egards,
Charles

Lori these are really good ideas. But I am not agree with you about number 1. These are not a new notaries mistakes. A new notary doesn't mean will make this kind of mistakes. I don't think these mistakes belongs only one notary. This is bussiness. Do you think companies are perfect?

Re: Mistakes/Anonymous

Anonymous,

By the way are you also Need to Know? You are appear to be a first party in your second sentence, "These are not a new notaries mistakes". It appears you are, have the courage to say who you are.

Just because you have been a notary for 5 years (or how ever long) does not mean you are experienced. I am aware of several that have held their commissions for 5 years and have completed 5 total signings. This is why I stated you need to know about the person before you hire. Again, it appears paying low fee and having ridiculous contracts seems to be the priority of quite a few SS's. On the other side, why keep hiring notaries that make these mistakes!

I was a new notary at one time with 20 years of mortgage experience under my belt. Chances are when you are new and have mortgage experience chances are less you will make a mistake or possibly not. On the other hand their are notaries with out mortgage experience and do the job of finding out as much as they can and have very few mistakes. Again, obtaining more information from the notary is vital more so than the silly contracts.

I am with you on the fact it is not one notary, but you can not tell me out of 1,000 notaries you will not find less than 75% that do their job and correctly.

I do run a business and very serious one. When I do receive calls from a new SS, I ask QUESTIONS and I do get referral information before I even ask of pay or contract. If the SS is a dead beat why would I even want to look at the contract.

No one is perfect that is what makes us human. My best learning comes from mistakes and thus the name mistake. Do not get me wrong, not performing your job is not a mistake in my eyes, it is not having the ability to do the job correct and you should be fired!

Lori,

I'd appreciate if you list some of the questions you asked SS when they call for your service?

Thanks!

Re: Mistakes/Jandy

Jandy,

I ask how long they have been in business, Title and Notary referrals (Name & number), what experience they have in the Mortgage business as well as their staff. If I were to pull and Dunn & Bradstreet what would I find? For some I have asked for credit references. If they will not comply that speaks for itself as I am willing to do the same for them, I have nothing to hide only to gain.

My time is money and I will not waste my time working with an unprofessional company. My company motto is to work as a professional if I worked with a company that is not then what good it my motto.

Hope this helps,

Lori

Yes, go on! I'm curious what other errors you are talking about. I agree with Lori, why would you continue to call a notary that makes these errors or are you saying all notaries you hire make these errors?

Print cut off documents. Did it ever occur to you that was what was sent to the notary. The notary is suppose to catch that, why not the person who sent the attachment. I have received many attachments where it is a cutoff document, or two pages on one page. Many times when we catch this type of errors, no one is in the title office to correct the error. Should we abandon the signing?

Do not read instructions and sign docs completely wrong. I love that one. How many of us get the docs where the instruction are 6 pages from the back of the package of 100 pages.
The title companies and lenders need to take some responsibilities with this. It is hard to go thru a package before a signing when it is sent to the borrower. Yet you expect us to follow directions.

Re: Mistakes not always from notaries...

3. Late showing up to the signing or No Show

I have, more than a couple of times, have had to phone the borrower with excuses for being late because docs were not available on time. That's not the notary's fault.

Re: Mistakes not always from notaries...

Lily, make no excuses for late docs. Tell the borrowers you don't have docs. If time is an issue for you or the borrower, suggest they contact their LO.

Re: Not really excuses...

I guess I should say apologies...instead of excuses. I have had a few times where I've had to call M/M Borrower and apologize..."I am going to be late as I do not have your docs yet." I really hate that part of the job. After all, it is me that M/M Borrower see and it is me they are looking at when they're expressing their sentiments about unprofessionalism, etc.

But you're right, I should not make any excuses.

2. allow borrowers to change the face of the deed.
Had a purchase last night. Deed and Mortgage both had the woman's name misspelled - Kathryn/Katherine. I callled title company. 45, YES I SAID 45 minutes after my initial call - called 2 times in between - I received a return call. I made my own tactical decision on how to proceed after the first 15 minute wait. My other option was to terminate the purchase. I wonder how well received that would have been?

Hire people w/experience. That means you must pay them more than the minimum. Hire people w/no actual experience but INTERVIEW them prior to needing them. Check references. Don't blame the majority for the errors of a few that you and your clients create by not wanting to pay for experience.

Re: Hooray Sue

Sue's right. Don't blame errors of a few on the majority. I'm one of many who has had to go back and fix the mess of someone who didn't have a clue.

Thank you to all who responded to this and for all the great feedback. I hope that the Minority of "Hobbyists" could read what is said and gain or grow from it.

Re: Hire Professionals -- Not Hobbyists!!!

I think the hobbyists are working after hours or Saturdays and will take the $50. assignments to help pad the family budget because they are already working a full time job during the day. If they had to do this full time, believe me, they would tune up real quick!
