Where are you located in Cal?

Yes, I am in California...

I think the question was meant to ask WHERE in California you are located.

Why? Does it matter?

Actually, yes it can. While the rules are the same, the amount and type of work is different by region. California is a HUGE state, ranging from city and suburbs to open farm communities. What works in LA won't necessarily work in Bakersfield.

True that... I thought all of the laws would be the same...

Thanks!!! Smiley

The laws are the same, yes. But the type of work and amount of work is not.

Some places, there is a lot of work, others there isn't. That's why they asked what part of California you were in...it really helps with advice.

In other words, she wants us to answer her questions, but she isn't even willing to answer a simple question in return about where she's located. Yeah, that really makes me want to offer help.

my advice...get a premiere membership here with a professional looking profile. Many companies look here to find a notary. Then sign up with every signing service on this website with a 3+ rating...Do not, I repeat...Do not sign up with Title companies until you have done at least 50 accurate signings. They are unforgiving and will not use you again if you've made a mistake.

How about, since I'm very new to the notary field? is it still a good idea, to sign up w/a SS?

Reply by Bethy_CA on 8/15/05 4:34pm

Some Signing Services are willing to take on newbies, especially the $50 ones, because newbies are more willing to take lower paying jobs in exchange for experience. There are plenty out there that will.

The general concensus here, though, is that you shouldn't take less that $65.

However, when I was starting I did a few of those lower paying ones, I wasn't ashamed of it...but I got letters of recommendation in addition to the low pay.

I also found a business niche that has really helped me...and I was lucky enough to befriend another notary in the same area, in th same line of business. We now refer to each other all the time.

if that's your question, I'd stick to general notary work...after you study your state's laws for about 6 months

"What does everybody recommend for a new notary, to get their foot in the door in escrow offices"

Rosa, no-one will ever advise a new notary to approach escrow offices!
You need to know your state's notary laws inside out (Luckily in California you have an excellent handbook), and do some general notary work.
Then sign up with signing services. When you have experience and error free signings then you can approach title/escrow companies.

As a *new* notary without any experience, you have no business approaching escrow offices to get your foot in the door.

I have a friend that works with at least 6 title companies. On several occasions she has offered to pass my business cards out, I always tell her that not until I get 100 signings under my belt. I don't want to set my self up. She even shared that one of the TCs does not give you the "3 strikes and you're out" opportunity, if you make one mistake that's it .

Youre smart. For crying out loud I WORK for a title company (and see a ton of notary errors) and STILL I'm sticking with SS's for a while...but mostly because I can't seem to wrench the work away from escrow officers and assistants...its a jungle out there.

Previous post from Rosa_CA

>>>Well last week, I notarized a re-fi.... and 1 week later, I received a call, that they need an acknowledgement that I witnessed the signature and confirm that it was me, but the only problem, is that all of the loan docs have the persons first and last name.. and the grant deed has the middle name... and that is why they are asking for an acknowledgement, because they want to remove the middle name.... But from what I remember in the class, we cannot fax anything w/our commission right? <<<

AND you think you are ready to work directly for Title Cos?
