Hello, a friend lives in NY and needs his paper to be notarized in CA, can I do it?

If you are in CA and your friend appears before you in CA then it doesn't matter where your friend lives. If either of those conditions are not met, you cannot do the notarization.

Good luck!

I'll play your silly game...what about using a credible witness?

Do you mean what about using a Subscribing Witness?

About Subscribing Witnesses

Note: A proof by a subscribing witness cannot be used in conjunction with any Deed of Trust, Mortgage, Security Agreement, Quitclaim Deed, or a Grand Deed document. (Government Code Section 27287)

PS. I would suggest that you may be in over your head on this and do not proceed further until you go back and read you Califronia Notary Handbook, address any questions to the SOS or to the various boards. This is not meant to be mean spirited, but to protect your commission, your bond, and your E&O. Best of luck
