Signing from the dark side
You've heard about the horror movie "The Shining". I'm going to write a horror story called "The Signing" based upon my experience a week ago. This is what hapened. I received a call from a LO from Countrywide to do E-docs. 2 loans. He OK'd my fee. The borrowers lived about 35 miles away. The husband suggested that they meet me where I am since they had business in my area. I suggested a restaurant and he said OK. It was a split signing. One borrower is in my area and two other borrowers weew in a different area using a second notary. We met at the restaurant and I sensed that they were kind of upset about something. Then the wife started complaining about meeting at the restaurant. I said it was her husbands idea. Her husband said he thought I had an office here or we could go to a Title office. I said "you didn't mention that on te phone". Anyway, the signing was getting off to a rocky start but I did manage to get them to sign a few pages. Then they had a question and wanted to talk to the LO. I called her on my cell phone. She told me that they hadn't sent me the Grant Deed and wanted to talk to the borrower. The borrower started talking to her and was really upset at that point. She lied about me and said that I told her something about the loan docs. I never told her anything. I didn't know what she was talking about. The LO believed her and questioned me about it. I had told the borrower if she had a question, she could talk to the LO. She was walking all around and creating a disturbance. I thought we were going to get thrown out. Then she took my cell phone outside and talked on it for 5 minutes. I told her husband to go get her. When she came back in, I took the phone from her. They were getting up to leave and said they weren't going to sign. I told that to the LO on the phone and I hung up. The borrower kept trying to take the phone out of my hand. They left or so I thought. I was putting everything into my briefcase when the husband rushed up to me. He wanted me to give him the loan docs. I said I had to send them to the Title Co. Then the wife came rushing at me. At this point I was afraid of them because they were acting weird and agressive. I was shaking and nervous. The wife asked for the loan docs and again I said they belonged to the Title Co. The Borrowers then went to the other location and completed the signing with the other borrowers. I sent the docs to the Title co along with my bill. The Title Co is Old Republic Title in Santa Rosa. I talked to them today and they refuse to pay me. They said Countrywide should pay me. Countrywide refuses to pay me also. They said everything is all my fault. I learned a lesson. I'm never going to do E-docs again. At least I wouldn't be out that expense. I'm going to write a book. I figure I should make some money from my experiences. Take care, fellow notaries.

I had a similar experience but not quite as bad...
Both the husband and wife had the same demeanor as your...signers from hell. Luckily, mine signed and the documents are now out of my hands.

You're never going to do e-docs again? Have a nice retirement.

I had a signing one time where I was trying to explain the docs and she would say "I know" after everything I said, like I was talking down to her....then when I stopped explaining, she would say "What's this?" and I would start explaining and she would say "I know" lol

Lol, I was thinking the same thing. After that whole story THAT'S the moral he (she?) got out of it? Personally I'd rather eat the expense of a few sets of edocs than eat the expense of losing half of my business.

CaSigner....
don't "throw the baby out with the bathwater".
Old sayings like that are 'old' because generally...they are true. Don't give up on edocs, or you will be in retirement. Just go on - for all the nutcases, there's lots of sanity and satisfying signings.

The grass is always greener...
I take E-Doc and Overnight and BELIEVE ME... overnight packages can cost too!
On one job I had to make 3 trips to UPS (20 miles one way) to find a rogue package that finally came in looking like it just went to war. I had talked to the Lender several times about it and because they are really good clients... I let the trips slide... but the DOCS looked HORRIBLE! WWIII. I called and let the Lender know and they said to sign anyway. So I did. When the TC got the package the EO called and started yelling about ettiquette and asked me if I had fun rubbing F%CKING McDonalds and Dirt all over the docs.
I thought to myself... no but I'd have fun shoving some freakin' McDonalds up your nose Mr. Snooty!
It all worked out... at about a zero profit... but that doesn't mean that I won't take overnights... It's All Good!
