You are playing with fire if you do not have E&O or a bond!

Want to risk losing your house and everything you own if you make an error on a notarization on loan documents that may cause financial hardship for the borrower???

what do you do in the states that don't require or sell bonds? Is E&O enough?

Re: Sylvia's right!

Even if your state doesn't require a bond, you should still carry E&O. You should not be accepting ANYTHING until you carry it.

E&O isn't required in all States, but I thought Bonding was?

Granted, in many cases it isn't much of a Bond, but isn't at least that required in all states?
Anybody know?

I still think all notaries should WANT to be bonded and insured. The bond protects the public the E&O protects you. The cost is minimal.

Re: E&O/bond distinction

Was really responding to query if all state required bonding.

Not required, but boy are you taking a risk if your don't have E&O.

Bonding is totally different. Bonding guarantees money is available thru an outside agent. You are still responsible to pay the money to the bonding company.

A bond has to be posted with a particular entity. In the case of a notary bond, the bond is posted with the SOS.

i.e. Someone notarizes a document that is false and know that before they notarized. A person suffers a loss. Goes to SOS, files complaint and you are found liable. Person collects, thru SOS, from the bonding company. Bonding company comes after you for the money they put out.

It's not required in the state of Ohio and in KY only a property/surety bond of $500.00 is required.

I didn't know there were any states that didn't require being bonded. If I were you, I'd get bonded and insured b4 you sign up with any SS...for that matter, even b4 you notarize a single document. If a SS doesn't require their notaries to be bonded and insured, I wouldn't use them anyway. CYA!

I've worked with American Signing Connection

Did a signing July 23rd for them. Haven't been paid yet but if it's not past 30 days, I don't consider it late. I would work for them again.

CT doesnt required a bond or E&O . From the sounds of it I should get E&O any suggestions for who carries it and how much is sufficient?

Re: I've worked with American Signing Connection

I first got mine through a local insurance company that went through Western Surety. Then added more coverage throuth National Notary Association - also Western Surety was the insurer.
