Calif Witness Question

I know Cali is not a witness state but the other night I had a TC request that I sign as a witness on docs that showed witness signature line. I did it. I'm now wondering if I should be signing the witness line anyway. Does anyone in CA just sign the witness line.

"Does anyone in CA just sign the witness line."
Only if I'm asked to do so.

There is no prohibition on the notary being a witness to the documents in the State of California; however check the list below to ensure that the documents are not from Louisiana as the notary cannot be a witness for documents originating from that state.

CT - 2 witnesses, one can be notary
GA - 2 witnesses, one must be notary
FL - 2 witnesses, one can be notary (Required for deeds of Conveyance only)
LA - 2 witnesses, Cannot be the notary
SC - 2 witnesses, one can be the notary
VT - 2 witnesses, one must be the notary

If you are ever called upon as a notary for certain documents originating in a "witness state" you will have to get a witness(es) depending on the state. If you notarize deeds and mortgage documents from a witness state pay close atttention to the list above.

VT Witnesses

Brad_Ca's list became outdated with respect to Vermont in 2004, when the
requirement was abolished. See message #40241
