Heat Bill...O/T
I did a closing last night in a home that was downright cold. Had the borrower tell me that his last heat bill was about $53 for his small home. This month his bill was $179!!!
Mine last month was about $78 so I'm dreading this month's bill. Have to do a few extra signings to pay for the heat bill or freeze your you-know-what off.

Same here Betsy. Last year the highest bill was about $82. bucks - first bill this year was $150.bucks. Yikes! I like to leave it set at 60 degrees, but when it's a day like today -9 degrees You have to turn it up as you said or freeze-it-off.
I've been to signings where it was so cold your nose started to turn blue and lose the feeling in your fingers. Gee! A 500K house and can't use the heat? there's something weird about that. lol Now I wear my Woolies just in case I enter a "no-heat zone"
Have a Great Day and stay Warm Betsy.

To help eliminate the Excel winter envelope shock, every month throughout the year I mail $100, building up a credit, so it's not quite as scary opening up the winter month's bill.

I know someone here that keeps her thermostat at 50 and she and her son wear jackets and scarves in the house! Our heating bills are supposed to sky rocket this season.

Ours just went up 47 Percent
That's all the public utilities commission would grant the largeest gas company in MI. They asked for 49 percent!!

This year's heating bill will be $60. That's what I just paid for a chord of wood. We don't have central heat, only a fireplace. Last year, we didn't even go through a whole chord. We also have a couple of Delonghi oil-filled radiator heaters for keeping the chill off.

Re: Summer A/C Bill...O/T
We get big bills during the summer. Our electric bill for a/c (one 5 ton and 1 2 ton unit) runs about $175 a month during July, August and September. (+/- some depending on the weather gods and goddesses of course.)

Northerners pay in the winter ... Southerners pay is the summer. It all comes out in the wash. (Speaking of the continental US only). HI and AK may be exceptions.

Thank goodness for wood stoves! The only time we use our propane is at night! This single wood stove keeps a 2800 sq ft home warm all day and the furnace doesn't kick in until around 1 am. I wonder how people that are barely scraping by as it is will have heat this winter? We get our wood from a local sawmill, $25.00 for a heaping truck load. Can't beat it!

We cut a couple of trees every year for the cabin. However, in Denver, most people have been forced to either quit using fireplaces or install gas inserts in the fireplaces because we have "no burn red days" where we aren't allowed to burn.

In the summer my bills run about $230 and now I am saving since it's winter. My bills run between $150 - $200 in winter. I also have a fireplace, but I find it helpful to close the upstairs vents (I have central heat and air) during winter since heat rises. My family from Vermont will be coming to stay with me for the Holidays. It's going to be strange to them that we don't have to plow and scrape windows. I am going to try and keep the heat down a little so they will feel right at home. - Melissa

I am on the budget plan in Arizona for my electric heat and cooling, only $150 a month all year. I just had a gas fireplace installed in my home and I use that to warm the Living-Dining and Kitchen when I am home. I have no idea how much my gas bill will go up, but I have my thermostat set at 65, and I love sleeping in a cold room with lots of blankets...Of course with a low of 39 and a High of 70 life is pretty good.
