Maybe OT- Interested in Calif. opinion
Being from Jersey, I'm curious as to why there is so much saturation of notaries in CA. The requirements seem to be much more rigid than any other state but the numbers per sq mile are SO much higher! Jersey and California are very close in average cost's of living ( tops in the nation) and in their population per square mi. I'm just curious as to what California Notaries think why this is. I'm probably missing something, but this just bugs me. If you have insights and the time I'd appreciate your opinions. TIA!

Due to the fact we are saturated with radio commercials informing us that notaries can make $100,00.00 per year working part time and not putting any effort into it. Ha Ha!

Who's paying the bill for the advertisements( I'm afraid of the answer, because it seems so state specific, and I'm hoping if it's who I think it is that they never move to Jersey!)

well in my area(lodi ca) we are 45 minutes south of sacramento and the city has approved about 50k homes to be built over the next 5 years or so. figure that somebody is going to move into these homes and alot of people will sell there homes and move up to these. how many loan signings will there be???? theres alot of business here as long as the housing boom continues. also i know alot of "part" time notaries. they do manly home signings at night after work, one here, one there.

I just received the latest NNA brochure for their notary training seminars in California for the next 3 months. They are running 145 seminars with the State exam given at the end of the training. Perhaps this has something to do with it.

To all the Californians
Hopefully the influx of new notaries contains a lot of people that jump on any promise of lots of money and little work! These same folks have tried Amway and all the other get rich quick things and didn't last at those either once they figured out that it isn't as easy as it was made out to be. The new folks need to realize that this job takes lots of work, tons of hours spent marketing yourself, that's a never ending thing, the proper equipment, all the wear and tear on our vehicles, never ending supply purchases and waiting, sometimes, for months to get paid, fighting with companies that don't pay, and all the other "fun" aspects of this business. So hang in there old timers, the weekend SA's and pocket money SA's will eventually decide that it's just too much!

Re: To all the Californians
First let me say I understan where you are coming from.
For me though I got into this for the following reasons. First becasue I needed work that would allow me some flexibility in my schedule. Because my hubby and I had sat down and figured out what I would make at a full time job. Then we got prices on childcare. It turned out that it would cost me more to work at a regular day job than it would for me to stay home. Second I had researched alot of the get rich quick schemes and found them lacking. This to me was not a get rich quick scheme but something that I can enjoy doing because I like to meet new people. Third we figured the cost of everything before I took the course and test. So I knew coming in what was going to come out of pocket and what I would need to charge.
Yes there were certain things I could not plan for like SSs not paying but I think that it is part of this business and to tell you the truth i am enjoying this more than any other job I have had.
There are a lot of people out there that like the get rich quick schemes and the first thing that our instructor told us was that if we were in this to make stupid dollars we needed to re-evaluate why we were taking the course in the first place because there are two sides to the coin. She did say that we could make up to $3000. Though so far I am still "new" and haven't seen that yet.
I just wanted to put my two cents in and hope that it is not misconstrued. Thanks

Not misconstrued at all! Unlike some of the new ones that are coming into the business, you have a valid reason. At one time I was in the same spot you were. I was paying all of my salary + some of my husbands for daycare, really dumb! The ones I'm talking about, and i've spoken to them, are the ones who say they were told this is the easiest money you'll ever make, little work and lots of play! They were VERY deceived! They were told basically nothing about the output that would be required. Sounds like you, at least, had a honest instructor! Good luck, keep working hard and you may yet see that 3000. a month!

Re: To all the Californians
Thanks Bonnie. I looked for along time to find something I could enjoy and wasn't going to cost me more than I could make. Looks like I found it with all its ups and downs. Now The phone just needs to ring more!!!
