Wireless

I am thinking of going wireless and only have an YAHOO account. I will stop using my high speed cable hookup and only use hotspots for a free wireless connection. I am setting up a mobile office in my truck, Laptop, printer, scanner for fax backs. Does anyone out there do this and have any advice?

I just searched "wireless" and several messages came up. This topic has been discussed many times on this forum. Give it a try.

I was really interested to see if anyone just went with YAHOO and was it adequate.

How can you send faxes with a wireless office? Excuse my ignorance.

Re: Wireless...Calnotary

Only if necessary, I do have a scanner in the car to scan docs and send via e-fax.

I use a combination of wireless data card and hotspots. I prefer the hotspots actually because the data transfer is usually faster than the data card and in many of the areas I work I can't get within range of a cell tower. I use a device from SmithMicro that has a LED that indicates when I am in range of a hot spot and I can log onto many hotspots. One thing you may want to do is to make sure that you are set up so that your firewall keeps you in your "trusted zone" other wise your cimputer can possibly be seen by others. I run into unsecure systems all the time that leave themselves incredibly vulnerable.

Could you please clarify something for me? When someone uses a hot spot, it is usually at a place like Starbucks, McDonalds, and Panera etc. Correct? Therefore, in order for you to receive docs, email and faxes, you would need to be at a hotspot. Then, do you carry all your necessities into the hot spot, or do you park as close to the building as possible in order to stay in range of the connection?

I love my office, and my own little network. I could see doing that as a back up. However, for me to have ONLY a mobile office would be an unwise decision.

The link above will give you a list of free hotspot in your area. There are plenty of free hotspots in the area I travel that I don't need to subscribe neither Verizon or T-mobile (Starbuck) for my wireless need.

You can also use your laptop at FedEx Kinko's where they have high speed connection for $.10/min compares to using their computer at $.25/min.

BP/WV I agree. I have both but my mobile saves me a

lot of time. Hot spots are all over the place and include private systems if they are not encrypted. I run into hot spots all over and that is why I have a device that tells me when I am in the proximity of a hot spot. I also use an antenna relay system in my car which is basically a transceiver and it takes the hot spots' signals and amplifies them so I can actually be up to a block away from many hotspots. However to rely on wireless for all of your office needs would not work for me because in my area there are too many places where there is no cellular antenna.

Google Mail better than Yahoo

More storage, you can search. Get with it. You are a nano second behind me!
