warning - yet another e-mail virus

These e-mails are bogus Mail Daemon's - I'm getting them saying it couldn't deliver something due to permanent failure, always shows a 'to' e-mail address that is a title co, and always has two attachments - the first is the text note, second is labeled "pass-word".

Obviously - delete w/o opening.

May also mention - while all 3 of my computers appear to be functioning just fine, I inadvertantly discovered NONE can be remotely accessed and all have had settings changed, so they're all set to be overhauled today by my 'tech support slave' (son x law).

Of these computers - one is husband's private, one is my private, one is stricktly NSA, and ONLY the NSA has been totally inundated with infectious e-mails. Something must have cross-infected (they're on wireless network) to have changed settings, and is blocking them ALL from remote access.

Renee, you should consider some kind of software that prevents anything like that from happening.

On my system, running the latest Norton anti virus offering, running in full automatic mode, will sense anything coming in on any email, and eliminate it.

Also, regardless of whether I have a hardware NAT firewall (all cable connected machine would benefit from one, and at $40 dollars or so it's cheap protection) running, I also run Zone Alarm, which monitors outgoing internet calls from software and alerts you if an inadvertently infected machine is trying to pass the infection on.

Either way, it seems with today's protection options available, you've left yourself open to infection, which could easily be prevented using the correct software options.

Rather than have your son-inlaw spend all his time fixing problems on your machine, maybe asking him to investigate your protection options would be a better course of action. Your current problem could have been prevented, even without your knowledge!

I got hit with 2 virus's the same day and the only SS I had an email from was Notary Link. My computer slowed way down as I was trying to print a set of doc's. I have new Security but found that I hadn't set the auto detect right.

Oh, trust me, there are various flavors of anti-bad-stuff on our computers - why do you think I let this geek marry my daughter?! (joking, I love him dearly.) Besides, he thinks I'm a fantastic cook and I pay him in dinners ...

Discovered one of the 'personal' cpu's had the "Sober" virus or I think it's a Trojan Horse.

**Either way, it seems with today's protection options available, you've left yourself open to infection, which could easily be prevented using the correct software options.**

This will probably surprise you if you have not had problems before or realized you were not protected like it might have seemed, but your security software is not all that airtight.

Not really -- but it is seldom that the AV or FW makers will tell you that. Maybe in smallllllll print on a "how to clean up" page.

I am sad to report that no matter what you do, you are not really so protected. I have seen a machine look like it was secured up to its teeth and when another checker was run on it, it was full of trojans and viruses. The AV and FW gets substituted in with a virus or trojan more often that I like to admit in my own experience.

I think one thing that helps me is Pest Patrol. I have been better since having that on all the time. I use a virus program/fire wall as well.

I own every major AV and/or FW software and I use one for awhile and when something weird goes on I use an online checker or I install and check with another and bingo...there are problems that need cleaning up. So I switch and use a different one for awhile and rotate around. Like I said, I own them/purchased them and have the ability to update them and get the latest files for it..

Maybe I just get attacked a lot harder than most but it has been my experience that the first thing some of my attacking bugs do is to shut off any firewall and damage the AV protection. Having AV and FW software makes it a little bit more secure, but actually, nothing is a guarantee. The best advice I could give is to keep a back up of important files, and assume that your computer is available to peruse by anyone.

(My son is also a tech - for TAMU. He cleans up messes every day off of computers that are "protected" and which is has done the protection on. He and I agree that uninstalling your AV and FW and reinstalling it when the computer acts flakey --even a little is helpful. That way you KNOW you have a good installed copy for awhile.)
