Self Protection
Considering the fact that so many of us go to a strangers house, not knowing what may happen on the way there, at the residence(or where ever), and on the way back, does anyone here carry some type of self defense item? Such as pepper spray, MACE, a TASER, concealed weapon, or any of the such? Just curious.

Lopez,
I remember there was a discussion of this issue a short while ago (I believe on this site). You might want to search for "concealed weapon" or pepper. I think that word and that phrase were both mentioned in the various posts.

They may have, but doing a separate search on weapons then on pepper didn't really reveal what I was looking for. I wanted to know who carries them, have they ever had to use them(even if by mistake) ;) and if its concealed or not.

pepper spray. I've never had to use it nor have I ever even come close with a person. I decided to carry it after several 'dog' incidents. I would never hesitate to use it on human or dog if I thought it necessary.

Lopez,
Sorry I referenced the wrong site. I would go to the gomobilenotary site and enter the word "concealed". You should come up with two threads: one on Jan 4th, 2005 and the other on January 17th, 2005. i would also try "ccw" and "pepper". I think you will find extensive responses.

I have a concealed weapons permit and do carry a weapon. Not so much for the loan signings but for the property inspections which are on foreclosed properties that are vacant and some are in not so nice neighborhoods.

Re: Pepper Spary
I began carrying pepper spary for the ficious pit bull that lives a few houses down. Unfortunately, while the dogs are banned in Denver, they are not banned in my suburb. This dog actually killed one of its own pups a few months ago. The owners have raised it to fight. I don't know if it had before, but now that it has tasted blood, I don't feel comfortable walking our own dog or even myself anywhere near the house.
Now that I have he pepper spay, for signings I put it in my brief case, where it is easily accessible and in plain sight *if* I should ever need it.

Not exactly an answer to your question, but ....
There is always a written list of names, physical destinations, etc., before I heave the house for notary work. Call it the cheapest insurance possible.

Like you, Ernest, I believe in leaving a copy of the mapquest directions with the address I'll be at, at home. That way people know the exact route I took there and back, plus the address to where I should be at. I do think of sometimes carrying something myself, but the chances are low anything will happen to me, while the chances do increase when you are a lady. But, yeah, the chances are there. No bad stories so far, so I guess it's all good, or perhaps the bad stories aren't here, because there's no one left to tell it...

I feel a lot better going to a signing than delivering pizza. Signings require pre-approval by numerous people and most of them really want you to come. Even if you do like anchovies. If I am leary about the neighborhood I try to ask a non offensive question before hand like 'Is there anything I need to know about the roads in your area or the parking?' Sometimes this causes a friendly face to greet you near the front door. Especially with that " I'm just around the corner' call.
