my saturday signing....
So, I accept a signing for Saturday afternoon-which worked out great because my mom was in town, and hey, anything to escape for a while... well, be careful what you ask for!
Let me backtrack and say that my 6 year old son and I were attacked by a pit bull in october and I still have horrible scars and wounds, both physically and mentally (my son fared much better) and at the time of confirmation I ask borrowers that if they have large dogs to please make arrangements because of my fear, and briefly explain why-never had a problem before... well I get to the appointment and 5 snarling shar-pei's greet me at the door, along with the wife who is holding a beer. I let her know that I am not coming into the house unless the dogs are put outside or in another room-of course, her response is "oh, they dont bite, they're just babies-here put your hand down so they can sniff ya" ummm no! She finally agrees to put them away and I proceed into the house. Well, as I am trying to do my job she downs another two beers (she isnt signing anything, so all is well I think) and then blares country music and starts singing and dancing throughout the house and then decides that it is a good time for me to get over my fear of dogs......... ha. I grab my trusty can of pepper spray and my cell as 5 now very viscious and tell her to please remove the dogs. This time the dogs are snarling, jumping and slobbering. The husband is pissed as we are 3 documents away from being done and I think I am about to witness a domestic dispute-I dial 911 and waited to hit send..... luckily he quarantines all 6 dogs >;0p in the back room and we proceed. He then apologizes and states that this loan is a result of their upcoming divorce. Gee whiz, talk about paybacks for wanting to escape your mom!!!! Has anyone else encountered this problem? I know that in our line of work, we must accept that household pets are an "occupational hazard", but I have never had anything but kindness and understanding when explaining why I have this sudden fear of large unknown dogs. okay, sorry so long, but had to get that off of my chest!

Wow,
First let me say that I am very sorry to hear what happened to you and your son. Did it occur during a signing? No, I guess not, as if you were on a signing you wouldn't have had your son with you.
To answer your question, yes I have been at signings where there were dogs various times. I don't really remember them as being menacing, more often a case of being overly friendly. And thus distracting. I wish i could remember some specific circumstances, as I think they would be interesting. But it is all very hazy.

Nothing that was as exciting as your experience. A week ago Friday I drove about 50 miles for simple signing and was greetted by 4 dogs and 5 cats. All the dogs did was bark and....drop tell tale residue on the floor. The b was considerate and immediately picked up the droppings with a paper towel and deposited in her under the sink garbage. It did not take long to calculate the source of the zoo like odor in the house. The b was very nice. At least the animals did not make it to the signing table. Every signing is unique, that's what makes it so much fun.

I am sorry for what happened to you and your son. I was once bitten by a Chow and know that it can leave you scared and a bit gun shy.
I am a dog lover and have learned that it's not so much the dog as it is the dog owner. In the case that you describe, I believe, it is the owner with the problem. That being said, it's always a good idea to have the dogs put up when strangers are about, ie; signing agents.
I have never been bothered by a borrowers dog(s), until the time the dog belched and then proceeded to pass gas right beside me. The dog weighed a good 120lbs and filled the air with a stench you couldn't believe. Thank God Mrs. B had air freshener near by.
Things will get better.

Tulsa,
That's awful. I have never witnessed an attack by a dog except on television and it was so brutal that I can hardly stand to think about it.
I went to a signing recently where the confirmation stated there were 8 dogs.
Those were the house dogs. There were another 10 out in the yard. All were friendly, but I waited in the car until the owners came outside to let me in. I adore dogs. They are some of my favorite people, but I know strange dogs cannot be trusted to behave.
Under the circumstances you endured, I'd say the borrower is lucky you are a stable sort and not looking for a lawsuit. The intimidation factor the drunk Missus displayed with her dogs is disgusting.

I guess I've been lucky. More often than not, when a person answers the door with a dog at their side they'll ask me if I'm afraid of dogs. Which I'm not, I love em.
The only danger I've faced on a signing with dogs is that on more than one occasion I've used my "licking finger" hand (my left) to pet the dog, and then forgot until I licked my finger to flip through the pages. Yum.

Try using "SORTKWINK". It works for me.

I can relate...
I had half my face chewed off by a psyco German Sheperd when I was 11. Thank God all I needed was stitches and not plastic surgery.. The other day my Husband and daughter were hiking around the woods behind my house and three wild dogs ran up snarling and barking, thankfully she was on his shoulders and he ripped off a big branch and they took off. To this day I don't care for dogs, but I'm a softy for cats

Grrr...That makes me mad!
and it has happened to me on more than one occasion! I tell the borrower that I am afraid of dogs, not just the big ones, all of them! And they give me the "Oh, don't worry, they don't bite story." Just because they don't bite, doesn't mean I'm not afraid of them!
I've had the drunk spouse too, well actually he was stoned and drunk. He wasn't signing either, but I just about left anyway. He was really making me nervous!
I feel your pain! Put the bleeping dogs away! It's not going to hurt them to be locked up for a freaking hour!

Re: Grrr...That makes me mad!
I totally agree with Cherilyn. Put 'em outside for 30 minutes! I can't stand dogs sniffing at my legs and you know where. I've never had a bad experience but once went to a home for a closing. The borrowers led me to their kitchen and then gave me a look like "Don't know where we can sign;" their table was made into a feeding platform for the 5 cats - to keep the cat food up off the floor from the 3 dogs. After the signing the Mrs. says "Oh you'll have to brush the hair off your pants." I was covered and I had just taken those slacks out of the cleaning bag that morning!

Re: Grrr...That makes me mad!
lol, and here is an update. My DH and his father have a restaurant equipment business and I was in there today working-they had to fire their office manager and of course, I get called to active duty... so anyways I am sitting there and who do I see..... the borrowers!!! EEEK lol...
They didnt recognize me, ( I admit to pulling my hair over my face a la cousin it) and after they left the cashier ran up to tell me about the crazy drunk people... lol, I then had to let her know how I had the pleasure of meeting them! Do you ever see Borrowers in the "real world" especially one you would care to NEVER see again? >;0p
