FAQ

Should Notary Rotary decide to add a FAQ page to this site, which questions would you like to see in it?

Just to keep this thread organized:

a) If you want to add a candidate question, reply to THIS message and put your question in the subject line.

b) If you'd like to comment on a question or suggest what the answer should contain, reply to the message pertaining to that question (without changing the subject line).

Re: How do I use this forum?

When you post a messge, you should include some indication of which state you're in either in your "author name" or in the subject line.

Re: How do I use this forum?

Some other things the answer should cover:

Don't ask a question that is already answered in this FAQ.

Don't ask others to do your work for you. It's one thing to post something like this:

"On page 16 of the California notary Handbook it says that I can notorize a document written in a foreign language if [...] but I'm not sure if this applies to [...]"

and quite another to simply post:

"Can I notorize a document written in spanish?"

You should use the forum's Search facility to look for an answer to your question first. However, be careful in how you apply anything you find, especially when the answer is old, does not indicate which state the anwer applies to or is for a different state. It's your responsibility to decide whether or not anything you read here is applicable to your particular situation and location.

Shel, I need to know the same thing! I'm new and only have a deskjet printer and don't have enough money to run out and buy a laser printer before my first signing. How do I find the ANSWERS that everybody wrote back to you? Thanks.

Re: Do I really need a laser printer? Which one?

The members of this board will be happy to help you >>once YOU have done all that YOU should do to prepare yourself.<<

Please do two things: 1) Read, AND TAKE THE TIME TO FULLY COMPREHEND, your state’s manual for notaries public; then 2) come back to this board. Above the menu of posts, click the "First" button. Go all the way to the very first post in June 2003, "Welcome to the General Discussion Forum." Read all the way to the last post today. You will find your answer many times over in the intervening messages, along with far better information about being a signing agent than you’ll ever get from any certification course. I realize that much of what you will read will be duplicative, and some will be totally irrelevant. But, in sum, reading the archives of this board will almost surely be the most informative thing you will ever do to assist you in being a signing agent. You also would be well advised to pursue any Internet sites that posters have indicated might be helpful in furthering your knowledge.

If, after doing both of the above, your question remains unanswered, then come back and post your question on the board. You will probably find that you will get more and more helpful responses if you post under an identifiable handle and include a state designation in that handle.

Good luck in preparing for a fulfilling career as a mobile notary/signing agent.

I can pretty much go along with everything except when it comes to Jurat and Acknowledgment. This is basic Notary 101.

Unauthorized Practice of Law

Though, Unlicensed fits nicely too. But then again, so would Unlawful, or Unacceptable, or lots of other "U" words. Smiley

All are good for FAQs. Maybe we should name it FAGs For Newcomers and put in the basics that are always asked here on a daily basis. Well Harry, what do you think?

Interesting typo there (but understandable seeing as the Q key is so close to the G key ...)

What is the best practice for relying on a credible witness?

Any answer to this question should point out there are state specific rules to follow, but should go on to explain methods that will lead to a reliable identification.
