Scanners

Here's my setup; I have (Separate peripherals) a HP laser printer, Fax machine, laptop and digital camera.

What type of Scanner should I purchase, portable or non portable??? and why.

Thanks.

Non-portable. Scanners are generally sensative to vibration (especially being dropped!). Extreme changes in temperature are not healthy for 'em. Condensation will wreck havoc on the optics.

We've got a Canon scanner we love. I've used HP scanners, also, with very good results.

What you do NOT want is a wand-type scanner that you pass over a document! They're a trap for the unwary (and the cheap). You DO want a desktop unit that will scan legal-sized documents. An automatic document feeder is a big plus! A flatbed is my personal choice.

More questions?

Having a scanner is optional (IMO), but a portable scanner would be handy to make copy of borrower/signer's ID if they forgot to make copy when lender/title requested.

That's what I use my digital camera for. Take a picture of the ID, then print a copy and send back with the docs. Smiley

That's a great idea using the digital camera for taking pics of id's. I never thought of that.

I did have a lady one time that didn't copy her license. When I got there I called the SS and they said to just write the information down from her license.

I don't think I've ever needed a scanner to do this job. I have a 5 in 1 printer, but can't remember an occasion where I had to scan anything.

Are you perfectly happy with your 5-in-1 for the notary biz? If so, what type do you recommend? I don't have one yet. I'm VERY new to the biz. Thanks.

Just curious, what's the 5th function of your printer? I have a fax, scanner, printer, copier - 4 in 1 printer. What's the 5th?

I have a 5-in-1 printer also, Elizabeth. The 5th function is that it will automatically dial HP and give them a good cussing out when any one of the first four functions don't work. For good measure, it throws in a few epithets about the user unfriendly HP web site.

I use the scanner function as part of the faxing function. Since I don't have a fax line, I scan to a *.tif, *pdf, or *.efx and send faxes via email.

My scanner broke, and I needed to copy a document for a non-notary task. I used my 4 megapixel digital camera to photograph the 8.5 X 11 inch document and it was perfectly legible, although not quite as attractive as a good scan would be.
