all in one machines
hey guys... I'm shopping to update my Brother all in one 4150, which I love and have never had a problem with. I feel like I need an all in one for the fax/copy/scan features. I saw the Brother 4800 last night and it has everything I want for 200 bucks, but I've heard that these are not meant to take the beating of all the printing we need to do. Any suggestions?

I used that one for over a year and a half. I absolutely love it. I finally bought a regular printer (Canon ImagecClass D761) a year ago because I had to replace the toner every 1,000 pages on the 4800 and the drum needs to be replaced every 5,000. The new drum costs around $175 and the toner cartridges cost around $30 each. (The printer can go 5,000 copies before I need to replace the toner and each cartridge costs $145 with no need to replace the drum).
I still use the 4800 as my fax machine and sometimes it comes in handy if I want to copy pages while I'm printing on my printer and if I need to scan something to my computer I use the 4800. Good luck.

I would personally look at the HP 3015 - around $300, but there might be some rebates or gift cards at staples or Office maxx. You have to watch your overall cost of your consumables. One thing I look for is do I have to replace the drum or is the mechanism included in the toner cartridge? I have a color laser here where the replacement drum is almost $300! I have 3 HP's and none require a regular drum replacement, but I was looking at a brother laser fax a couple of weeks ago that did require regular drum replacement.
A few months ago, I thought someone on one of the boards was saying he got such a good deal on a printer, that it was cheaper than replacing the drum that he had initially set out to replace. That may give you an idea of the costs.
Again, I only have HP equipment and have never purchased a Brother, but the cost of your consumables (toners, drums, etc) and what those consumables are does give you something to research and apply to your decision.

thanks
Both of you reiterated what my hubby said..."I'm thinking about the cost of replacing the drum and cartridges" maybe I'll just keep the ol Brother and get a quality printer, Joan, I'll take a peek at the HP and thanks for telling Kathy about me, (if you did, I'm just guessing) she sent me a very nice e-mail...I'm hoping Vickie will e-mail me so she can get a note as well

I also have the HP 3015. I refill my own cartridges and it's working out well for me.

Take a look at Brother IntellFax 4100. Phone, fax, scanner and a copier I think. I only use mine for the fax and phone.

I have a Lexmark X5150 scanner/copier/fax/printer. I am not real good on the fax part yet, does anyone know about this type of all in one?
