stupid question

I know this is a stupid question but here it goes. Does anyone charge the borrower for their notarization on top of your fee? I don't. Just wondering if anyone does.

The fees you charge the Signing Company or Title Company include your notarization fee....all in one package. Now if the borrowers says "Oh, by the way, since you are here, can you notarize this......." - then you can charge the borrower your state allowed fee.

I figured that but that question just "popped" into my head.

I'm curious as to what most states allow you to charge. PA is $2 per notarization and if there are 2 signatures I can charge $1 for the additional signature. Somewhere in my newsletter from the notary assoc. I belong to I see they are trying to raise it to $5 in 2006.

Ali,
The Illinois fee is $1 per, not $.50

CA maximum fee's are basically $10.00 for each notarized signature on an acknowledgment or jurat.

Ohio is $1.50 for a Jurat & $2.00 for an acknowledgement, which just means I will be paying more Self-Employment tax than those more enlightened ones on the West Coast.

Joan:
I might have this wrong but have you looked into how they tax a notary? In our OR we charge $5 per stamp if you stamped $10 sheets there was no self employment tax due. Go to the NNA site and ask them about self employment tax. We were told we do not pay it and I believe my CPA does not file for it.

That is exactly what I am talking about. When some from CA can "write off" $10 per notorization off their self-employment or SS tax and I can only write off $1.50 - $2.00 each. They can write off more, but it costs them LOTS more to live there so I won't begrudge them their $100 write off. Of course they also have sunny weather while we are in the midst of a deep freeze.

Your question was not a stupid one-- The only stupid question is the one not asked..Heard that from a wise old teacher in school many years ago. A good thought to remember.

Florida is also $10-- (Do we get the title of "enlightened ones" also? Please, may we?

We even passed Chad 101 now--that should count for something.

Joan,

It's ten bucks per signature in Michigan too.
