Another name situation
All of the loan docs were in the name of Female O. Borrower. The name on her driver's license was Female Ombfambsaborrower.
Can you use the DL as ID applying the theory that the longer name can be used to verify the shorter name? Or do you consider this a completely different name?
In the actual situation the middle initial was the first letter of the last name and the last 7 letters of the name on the driver's license matched the last name on the docs. The docs were missing the first 9 letters of the last name as shown on the ID.
All opinions appreciated - thanx!

It's always been my understanding that the information used to verify identity can contain "more" information, but not less than that of the signature to be signed on the docs.
Sounds like you definitely had "more" info on the DL.
I had an interesting ID situation last weekend. Husband is a resident alien. Has a permanent resident card and a CA drivers license. Husband's name on the docs was Ricky Riccardo Lopez. The name on his EXPIRED CA DL was Ricky Riccardo Lopez. The name on his VALID/UNEXPIRED resident ID card: Ricky Riccardo.
Hubby borrower explains that his "real" last name is Riccardo, but that his birth certificate has his mother's last name tacked onto the end. INS refers to him by the father's last name (Riccardo), State of CA refers to him by his mother's last name (Lopez).
When I adopted my oldest son from Mexico, my husband and I went thru this and I understood what the borrower was saying. I was comfortable that hubby borrower was one and the same after examining the IDs he presented (picture on the driver's license matched the picture on the permanent resident card).
I made a notation in my journal as to both IDs and the explanation as to why there was a different last name on each document.
Sidebar: My son's last name on his Mexican passport was my maiden name. When my husband filled out any and all paperwork for my son from the time he entered the US, he deleted my maiden name and just went by his.
Kinda disrespectful wouldn't you say??? Hmmmm... Think when I go home tonight I'll say: "Remember what you did 18 years ago? I don't think that was right. I think you disrespected me and my family."

Yes, in working with the Hispanic population on a school level this is very common practice for hispanics to use the mother's maiden name in conjunction with dad's name. I learned this some years ago from one of my hispanic students.

To Susan...
Cultural differences in the placement of last names can make it difficult for notaries to ID people. It's important that we're aware of the differences and that we use more than one document to ID the person so that we are sure of their identity.
If someone was Ricky Riccardo on one piece of ID and Ernie Smith on another, I would have made a much different judgment call.

Re: To Susan...To Maggie Mae
It's very interesting huh? I never knew this until this student inform me, he also told his mom and dad had been together for years, had many children, dearly loved one another but weren't married. This young man was the nicest, most polite and I still occasionally see him to this day. He graduated perhaps 5 years.

Thanx Maggie and Susan. I can't wait for the day that my newness and paranoia has been replaced by conviction and certainty!

Depends what the title shows. Looks like it might be the lender as the name wrong. If title shows the long name then the docs are wrong. If Title shows the short name the long name on the DL would be good for verification as long as you have the cusotmer sign as on the docs
Title would need to be verifed to be sure.

Title showed the short name so I think she is good to go. From the 'signature' itself you can not tell what she wrote.
