***GIVE ME ADVICE ***
Please stop yelling by turning off your caps lock key - thank you!

Is the only reason you are going is to notarize a grant deed? Is the LO sending you to do anything else such as an entire loan package?

NO IT IS AN INDIVIDUAL CUSTOMER WHO IS REQUESTING A NOTARIZATION FOR THIS SINGLE DOCUMENT. THE L.O IS A FRIEND OF MINE WHO SUGESTED TO CHARGE MORE THAN JUST $10
PER SIGNATURE

How many miles will you drive and how much travel time will it take? Unless the customer can not leave their home - it is usually much easier and less expensive for them to just take the document to their local kinkos or UPS store. That said - you can charge whatever you want in addition to the $10 max for the notarization itself.

If you do plan on using your notary commission for loan packages - please begin by reading post 33325.

Oh, oh! Careful!

Yes, you can charge for travel in addition to the fee for the notarization itself. "... you can charge whatever you want in addition ..." will definitely get you into big trouble! Because I'm in CT, not CA, I can't tell you what the fee per mile is by CA law, but there probably is a maximum per-mile charge. If you exceed the per-notarization fee plus the per-mile fee, then you will be acting illegally, as well as immoraly.

I SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU
THE PERSON THAT NEEDS THIS DOCUMENT NOTARIZED WILL BE COMING TO MY LOCATION AND THAT IS WHY I DO'T THINK I SHOULD CHARGE EXTRA.

Re: Oh, oh! Careful!

I have the handbook out - and I promise under section 8211 where fees are discussed it does not proscribe any specific rules or guidance for charging for either travel or time. I believe that the IRS mileage reimbursement allows either 40.5 cents or 42.5 cents per mile - but that is what you can deduct as a business expense, what you charge is your business.

Any CA NSAs feel free to prove me wrong - but don't forget to have government codes to quote!

Re: Oh, oh! Careful!

First, if they are traveling to you and the only service you are providing is the notarization, the maximum you can charge is $10.00 per signature. End of story.

As for travel, California does not specify what can be charged. SamIam, you are right about the IRS reimbursement and that it does not impact what we can charge for travel. Two different issues.
