Just a simple question - here goes...

Yes, I probably should know, but I don't. Maybe didn't use the right search words. Whether or not you're a Premier or Basic member, if NR only lists the first 25 members with the rest falling off the page, do you know if any of the ss or tc's out there would bother to scroll beyond those first 25 names? What I'm asking is that if there are 100 notaries in the same area and there are always new people coming onboard, how would they ever know you exist unless they take their time to do a lot of research? Thank you for your patience.

Yes, I do know they can look us up by zip code. However, a major metro area might have many more than 25 notaries in the same zip.

I am in San Diego. I have signed up with 11 companies (I plan to sign up with more) and zero calls. I am doing this for extra income. I have read most posting on suggestion. Right now I can't afford a laser/jet printer. any other suggestions?

If you can't afford a laser printer, ...

... you must NOT do edocs! Unless, of course, you take the files to Kinko's and have 'em printed on their laser printer.

You could do overnighted packages, however.

Re: If you can't afford a laser printer, ...

You can't print some edocs without a laser printer because you need a printer that has PCL capability.
Laser jet printers do not have this. You can print PDF or Word on a laser jet and then go to Kinko's ,Office Depot or where ever to print out a set of laser docs and use the laserjet copies for the borrower. Some documents have to be printed from a website, so Kinkos could not help you there. You don't always have time for that as Edocs are almost always last minute.

Re: If you can't afford a laser printer, ...

Laser Jet printers are Laser printers. Ink jet printers do not have pcl and are not laser printers. I believe that is what you were saying but just stated laser jet for ink jet.

Re: Laser vs. deskjet or inket printers

Margaret,
The majority of HP *laserjet* printers are PCL. *Laser jet* printers are laser and use toner. Deskjet or inkjet printers should not be used for printing e-docs because instead of "dry" toner that fuses to the paper, they use wet "ink" that can smear, run if a droplet of water touches it, etc.

i thought most companies over-night them to me. I work at a hospital, so I have a couple of signing there-no big deal. thanks for your remarks.

Anon, I purchased two Brother HL-1440's and so far I've been ok with printing out docs. Mine have always been PDF files. This printer has PCL4 compatability so it wouldn't help with PCL6. But if that's not critical with the ss that give you business, then these two printers only cost me around $85 each. You can search on the web and find a bunch. My original cartridge printed out about 2800 pages and the replacement cartridge can print out about 6000 pages and costs about $75 in a store or much less or the net.

The ones closest to the borrower

show up at the top of the list if you search by address and zip. So if you are a premier member, you should be first, if you are closest.

Pete alot of times SS's and TC's do a search by mileage and try to find the nearest notary through that method.

Yep, I understand. With so many zip codes in the city that probably won't help much. But we'll see. Thanks.

The results of a search are geo coded based on your address. If the searcher uses an address and zip, whoever is closest to the searched address is listed first. If no address is used, my understanding is that the order is based on location relative to the center of the zipcode.

I have a PO Box, so when someone does a search by zipcode only, I am usually at the top. If they use a full address, I may or may not be at the top, depending on how close to the center of the zip the searched address is.

They usually find someone within the first 25 names. I do not believe that they put a lot of research into the search. They use several websites to find a notary. In my experience it pays to become a premium member of any notary website. I get a lot of calls from this site alone.

Thanks Margaret. That's what I suspected. I wasn't sure if the $39 was worth it if your name drops off in a matter of weeks. But I signed up for it last week so time will tell.

Re: I signed up last week so time will tell.

Pete,
Don't hold your breath that something will happen immediately -- as with anything else, it takes times for SSs to find you. I hope besides signing up on NotRot (and hopefully others), that you are also signing up with a minimum of 200 signing services. You may have said in your original post, but the topic got side-tracked for a little while.

Margaret - I just remembered - I did get two calls off of my membership - one was to notarize a birth certificate and one was to notarize a billof sale. Fortuneately I was out of town for both so I didn't have to answer. But I hope this is not indicative of the calls I'll be getting in the future.

I get those calls too, but I refer them to the UPS store. Once I quote my fee to come to them, they dont call back. I used to do weddings and I got a lot of calls for that. But mostly I get calls from Title companies.

That's great Margaret. I didn't think about the UPS store. I told them to go to Office Depot or a Staples or their local bank. I never thought about weddings and being dumb, what is it that you notarize, their marriage certificate??? And what would you charge for a service like that? thanks.

In Florida we can perform marriages and we do notarize the certificate for a whole $30

Re: Don't shoot down general notarizations

Many of the people who find me on 123 are needing general notarizations. Although they are *generally* not high-paying jobs, you just never know who these people know, and when they will refer someone to you who is in need of notarization services. If you don't already know, find out how much you are allowed to charge for the notarizations (i.e., whether you can charge per notarization or by document), and what you are allowed to charge for travel.
