Notary Numbers around the U.S.
Ran across the notary census that the NNA does every five years, the last one being 2002. For all the talk we see about CA having a notary on every street corner, they barely cracked the top ten during the last count (although this was done before NNA's push there to manufacture as many new notaries/members as possible). Granted this info is almost 3 years old, so it'll be interesting to see how the rankings will have changed in 2007.
1. FL 365,000 2. TX 352,000 3. OH 330,000 4. NY 250,000 5. NC 205,000 6. IL 190,000 7. TN 164,000 8. GA 161,000 9. VA 160,000 10. CA 159,000 11. NJ 150,000 12. MI 149,000 13. KS 134,000 14. MA 131,000 15. SC 129,000

According to the 2005 CA notary Handbook(published by the SOS) there are "more than 236,000" notaries in CA.

Thanks for sharing those numbers, Roger; quite interesting.
I think many of us tend to conflate notaries public and signing agents, and that ain't necessarily so. Especially is that probably true in Texas. Here, if you have a pulse and aren't listed on any child molester sites, you can become a notary. No training required before or after; just the money for the application and bond.
My impression is that whereas Texas is not a competition-free environment for signings, we don't have the same level of competition as either California or Florida, both of which set a higher standard for notaries and thus probably attract more people who have the moxie and the underlying skills (They may not know proper English grammar, but they do know English is the language they speak; they don't pick their noses in a signing and then suck their finger; they eschew most bodily noises in public; they can drive an automobile as long as they don't have to parallel park, etc.) required to be a signing agent.
So whereas Texas may have 352,000 notaries, that doesn't mean we have 352,000 signing agents.

Come to think about it, even state legistlator is cashing in on the trend. I received a postcard couple weeks ago from WA department of licensing that there will be a $5 increase in notary license.

These figures are assuming Roger's numbers are semi-corrrect (3 yrs old, he said) except for CA...wherein I am assuming Jon's number of California notaries is correct, and assuming that the population numbers available for 2004 from the Census Bureau is correct, here's how this looks comparing the notary population to state population.
Not trying to prove a point just like to crunch numbers.

Re: Notary vs. Population
Brenda has come up with some interesting numbers vis a vis notaries per capita in the most heavily notarized states.
Let's all pray that Brenda never decides to get a boyfriend. Think of the valuable information we would never get if Brenda spent all that time primping, instead of doing notary stuff.

Au contrair(phonetic, barely speak Enlish let alone French)
Brenda's analysis of % of notarys to population ( to 2 decimel places, yet) is clear proof that she needs to get out way more often

PS to Roger
You do not need to follow advice to Brenda We all learned in Vegas what a wild and crazy guy you are great meeting you, hope that your trip home was uneventful and that the signings were all piled up and waiting for you. Even your cubs (lc) are starting to win a few I have been so busy that I haven't even finished unpacking speaking of that, I better get back to work

Remember to expound on your VR encounter...
Go Cubbies!

Bob and Hugh...Your age is showing.
Women are now allowed to do math and statistical analysis and to like what they learn by doing do. In fact, women are now allowed to major in science-- even in Texas.
Younger men even find it attractive when women have a brain and the ability to use data. I like younger men...a lot.

Brenda, Caution re: younger men.
Remember the legal age of consent in TX is, I believe, 12 Remmeber what happened to that teacher, Mary Jane LeTerneau, or whatever her name was. But now I guess that they are happily married. Tough way to get a husband. Hugh is, I understand, still of the" barefoot and pregnant" school, but have a good time with your math and science.

Darn...age is a number too!!! Crunching "age in number of years" is no fun at all!

I dunno, Brenda. Somehow, the image of a widow with a big brain and a bass boat just doesn't have much ooomph! with me.

Bass boats dry rot and beauty fades away with age, but honey, brains hold their own.

Therein lies our fundamental misunderstanding, BrenBren. I don't want my woman holding her own. I want her holding mine.

No misunderstanding at all!
You are looking for a woman who'll take you up on whatever...I am interested in crunching numbers that enlighten me on my business.
