Notary Title and Rank

The other night, I had notarial wording where my name was to be inserted in one of the blanks, and then "title" and "rank." I realize the proper way to complete this is "Jane Doe, Notary Public" but what is meant by "rank?"

"Rank" is there in case ...

... the notarial act is being performed by an officer in the military. It does't apply otherwise.
