OT subject on SUV
I'm in the process of purchasing an SUV because I live in an area which is mountainess and the winters are pretty harsh. Does anyone have a Jeep Cherokee and if so, do you like it and is it good on gas? Right now all I have is a Cavalier.

Mary, don't let my opinion completely sway you one way or the other...but I'll share with you MY experience with a jeep cherokee. I bought a 1998 a couple years back and while trying to sell it this past year, I found that the value depreciated drastically. I ended up having to take a loss on it. Also, I had it towed three times the first year I had it. (various things wrong with it) I now drive a Chevy 1500 excab pickup with a 350 engine and I get better gas mileage with that truck then I got with that jeep. The sight of a jeep makes me cringe. :(

Nothing against domestics, but imports are the best except by Hyndayi, but if you buy a Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Pathfinder,Toyota Fourrunner you wont regret it. No problems and low depreciation. Of course not all 100% are trouble free. But the % of getting trouble is less with this models.

Re: I have a Jeep
I am on my third Jeep. I had a Jeep Cherokee Sport, A grand Cherokee 1998 and now a grand cherokee 1999, I love Jeeps . I believe they are one of the best for 4wheeling. I had all terrain tires on my 1998 and never had problems in the snow at Big Bear Lake, while I saw other suv's 4x4's struggling most didn't have all terrain tires. But it's nice not to have to put chains on your suv. You can even have two sets of tires if you which, regular for summer and snow or all terrain or mud tires would also work great on the snow. My brother has also owned two jeeps. He has lared 1993 with over 280,000k miles on it, he has taken long trips and always thinks it's his last trip on it, but that baby keeps on going. Sorry for getting carried away---but I do Love Jeeps!! Wish you well!

I have a Rodeo 4wd and I just love it, I just bought a cavelier due to gas prices, it works but I have a better day when I take the rodeo for short distances.

Subaru makes excellent vehicles for snow, all wheel drive, Outback, Forester and Legacy, I've had two, one Forester and one Legacy, excellent performance and priced right for my money. Check out web site....

I agree with the anonymous poster. I drive a Subaru Outback and am very happy with it. We live in the mountains of western NC and I have driven up and down a lot of muddy rutted personal lanes in the last year or so. The car has over 112000 miles on it and is still going strong - hopefully for another 100000 or so miles!

Yes, I'm with Becky/NC, my Forester still in the family has well of 100, 000 miles, never a problem, works like a charm. The Legacy now with over 20,000 not a problem either. Regular oil changes and they are both great. I too live in mountains and drive in snow, never have to chain up, both cars handle snow perfectly.

I have a Jeep
I have a Jeep Grande Cherokee Laredo, 2001, and love it. In town I guess I get about 17-19 mpg. On the open highway I get 30-35 depending on speed, traffic, weather etc. It has great turning ability, 4 wheel drive when needed, which is never here in NV but I did use it driving in Idaho winter. I sit up higher than a car and can park just about everywhere. I have these steps to get in and out of , my husband thinks they are useless, but I like them, they are called Nerf Bars and are metal tubes that run along the drivers door back past the passengers. It makes it easier to step into the car.
I have driven my husband trucks and Excursion. To me they are "land pontoons" in comparison to my Jeep.
You may want to check around for a Jeep that is 1-2 years old. Leases that were turned in. You can get a 2002 Jeep here in Vegas for about 17,000, if you are a good negotiator.
Good luck shoping for one.

Since I get the Chrysler discount, my husband has leased a jeep grand cherokoo in the past.
I found it to be very cramped and I'm only 5'4".
Handled well and you cannot compare any SUV mileage to a cavalier.

Great on snow, lousey on gas!!
But I love my 93 Jeep Cherokee. 180,000 miles and Betsy Sue is starting to get tired. I am in the market for a Dodge Caravan (newer and fewer miles), but I plan on keeping my Jeep for those winter days when the snow is #$*& deep to a tall fellow. When my air went out this summer (along with the cruise control), the mechanic couldn't understand why I wasn't going to get it fixed. Told him that as soon as I get my "newer" car, the Jeep was going into semi-retirement and I didn't need air in the winter or cruise control. He had no answer. Once a Jeep lover, always a Jeep lover, like the sign in the window of a Jeep that I saw not too long ago -- "It's a Jeep thing"!!!
