Re: Another signing experience

Hi all,

I had just arrived for a signing, and as I walked in the front door, I noticed this huge fish tank in the front hallway. I think the tank was about three feet long. And there was only one fish in it - a fish that seemed to be about six / seven inches long. I had never seen one before, but I believed I knew exactly what it was - a piranha !! Well, I guess I had seen my share of travel movies from South America, where unsuspecting animals wander into the wrong waterhole and are reduced to carcasses by packs of voracious piranhas in a matter of seconds !!

Anyway my suspicions were confirmed by the woman borrower. As you can imagine, my mind was overflowing with all sorts of questions. As to what it consumed - a goldfish every other day. And I guess it plays with it until it gets bored and then rips it apart with its razor sharp teeth. I also inquired whether it could exist in the tank with another piranha. Only if the two had been raised together I was told.

I am sure the image of that piranha will remain implanted on my brain for some time to come.

Did you put your hand in the fish tank to see if the lady borrower was telling you the truth?

Piranha are illegal to sell in the U.S. I wonder where she got it..... Would be kinda cool to see a real one.

There are whimple (sp?) piranha that look like piranhas, and they have a cartilage growth in place of the two front teeth.

Stephen_VA, ferrets are illegal in CA

Different cities and states have rules/regulations/ordinances about various pets. If a particular creature is a threat to another creature commonly found in a certain part of the country, that animal may be banned from an area.

Never make the assumption that any one creature is completely banned from the U.S., chances are that it just isn't so.

Fourteen years ago when my husband and I owned a tropical fish store in NJ piranha were legal. I can't say if they are today.
