$30 Background check??
I have an application for a SS that now requires background checks for all of their applicants. I suppose I don't have a problem with this. I don't think I have any skeletons to hide. But, they want the Signing Agent, ME, to pay for the check. I do have a problem with this. They may never hire me, or maybe they own a piece of the background check company.
Anyway, since I am new maybe I'm unaware. Has anyone else paid for this? Should I? Did it pay off; I mean did you get any work out of it? Your input is very much appreciated.

Geez!! Do they want to take a drug test too?? To my knowlegde this is not normal, at least to pay for it. A person would think this would be their responsibility if they wanted to do background checks. I personally would be very leary of this one.

I would never pay for a background check for an SS. As Notary Publics were undergo background checks through the States for which we are commissioned. I would be careful as this could be a scam. Employers these days do all sorts of background and credit checks on their potenial employees but that is a cost of doing business for them. Never have I heard of a company passing this onto their employees let alone a company to ask an IC to pay for this. Please post who this SS is, someone on here might know if they are legit or not but either way I would not do business with this company.

Just FYI, not all states do background checks on those applying for a notary commission. Many states require nothing more than a signed application and check for fees.

I suppose it is a company not just an SS if that makes a difference. It is GAC.

I would do it, but only if they deduct it from my first signing. I wouldnt pay for their expenses. Thats the cost of doing business and they should pay it.

I would have to call, because on one of thier application pieces, it has a spot where they want you to authorize either a credit card payment or a direct debit from your checking. So they want this payment at the time of application.

and what's the guaranty
that you'll get enough work for mthem to warrant you putting out your own money for a background check?
I would not do it! If they want it they need to pay for it.

Don't do this. Just don't.
First, you have no assurance you'll ever get any work from them. 2. It DOES ding your credit score as it's an inquiry. (they say they don't check credit, but people have posted that they DO.) 3. If they need someone in your area, you'll get the job anyway. 4. It's probably just a nice little profit pocket for them.

I agree... Don't do it! And... now that I have experienced working for a few of these SS's, if a background check is needed I may be the other way around! (NSA's checks the SS'a)? ;)

Re: Don't do this. Just don't.
I have been doing this for over 8 yrs and have never had a company ask this of me. The state does a background check on me prior to issuing my commission. There are so many companies out there I would not pay to have any type of check done. We are public officials and by getting the commission we have been deemed worthy!!

I have been doing this for years and I never heard of this. You have a alicense from the state which does a back round check befor the issue. I wouldn't do it.
