fees for recording
Again, I have searched the boards and cannot find relevant help. How much extra do you charge to record docs? Do you 'like' recording docs? If so why? or why not? You may enail me privately, [e-mail address]

Call the County Recorders office for the fees they charge for their county. For most counties, it matters what your paper size is (letter vs. legal) and how many titles are on the document, etc. I'm assuming you're recording heloc DT's as an accomodation to the lender. You'll have to figure what you're time is worth in getting the documents to the recorder's, standing in line, etc. If it were me I know what I'd charge, but you have to figure the value of your own time.

Is this service asked for very often? 5% of the time 40% of the time? Just curious - never heard of the notary doing this.

I'm told this service is being done for certain types of heloc loans, where the lender has no requirement for title insurance, escrow services, etc. I have no personal experience with it, but I'd sure love to get my hands on an account like that. The SS or NSA handles the docs from start to finish, hand carrying them to the Recorder's office. I have lots of thoughts and speculation on this type of service, but if it works for the LO, it works for me.

can you please share your thoughts? Also, can you advise of a ball park figure that I should charge? You can email me privately. [e-mail address]

I own a search company as well as doing closings. What I can tell you is this, if you are doing a recording for a client that DOES NOT require an update to be done prior to taking it to the clerk to be recorded, I would charge anywhere from $15 to 25 depending on how much travel time there is for you to drive to which ever courthouse.
If the recording DOES need to be updated, you first must be sure you have sufficient E&O to cover yourself. At least $250,000 but I recomend $500,000. Why, because if you miss any piece of information that may have been recording during the time period you are covering during your update, you are held responsible for what ever you missed not being reported and WHAM, you have a claim filed for the amount of the lien you missed.
But for what you would charge for an update and record, it would be about $25-35. But also remember that you will need to supply the company with the actual recording information as well, which consists of the recording date, recording time, and the book/page or instrument number the clerk assignes to it.

wouldn't even bother. not worth it for the traveled mileage (cost of gas is so high these day) and wear and tear on your car. Too risky !

What I have found is that I should not take on any assignment that I will not feel is worthwhile in payment.
I used to go pull records for $25. It's 10 miles, park, fight for a position in the courthouse lines and it's just unpleasant at times. Now, I won't go to the courthouse for less than $50...that can be two jobs, but it's not worth it to me otherwise.
Yesterday I did two hours of research there for $50 for a PI. Like I told him, I'll do all the research I can in two hours, and stop when that's up and call you to let you know my progress. However, it's not worth it for me to go on a piece by piece $10-$25 per record type search. $50 is my minimum courthouse run.
Under $50 and it is not worth it to me to go on a day when I don't already have something in that direction.
