have any friendships developed...
as a direct result of your signing? This morning had a play date with a woman (daughters same age) that I signed in January, I have a new hair stylist that I signed in March and a new babysitter. I was just curious to see if relationships develop with your borrowers after the fact. I also was invited to a baby shower of one of the girls at a local office that always uses my services. I also have the cards of an insurance agent, construction guy that does side work and another woman that I am giving my girl's hand-me-downs. It just dawned on me that I have a wealth of new referral and friendships...by accident?

I think the development of friendships depends on your personality. If you're outgoing person, you're going to develop more relationships/friendships. This is the type of business where you meet a lot of people and have one-on-one interaction with them; so it stands to reason these relationships will flourish.
If you're the type of person who is strictly business, the friendships will not be as forthcoming.

I have come across an old high school friend and his wife. I have also met a lady that was born on the same day, same hospital, and same timeframe as me. We were neonatal roomies! ;)

Cheryl wants to know if any friendships have come out of signings.
No, but the constables have been called to me twice, and at least one lawyer has told me, "Give me your wife's phone number and I'll handle her divorce for her FREE!"
One of the constables and I did get on a first-name basis, though, when I asked, "Hey, Gene, could you loosen these cuffs a bit?" and he responded, "Button it up, A**hole!" That was my nickname in high school, but I don't know how he knew that.
Besides all that, Cheryl, I'm not impressed with your new insurance agent, hair dresser, contractor, babysitter, motorcycle mechanic, grocery sacker, taxi driver, homebuilder, yard man, university president, bait salesman, mayor and dental hygienist. If I was as good-looking as you, I'd have to put an annex on my Rolodex. What are you doing to people to turn them off -- stealing from their refrigerators while their backs are turned?

I met a borrower, she had a few medical problems and was not getting by on her disablility retirement payments very well. She had hurt her leg and has problems with it. She was interested in being a signing agent she thought maybe she could handle it. I told her to go get her notary commission and I would help her. She got it, then got certified with the NNA. After that she came over and I walked her thru a set of loan docs. She called me when she had a questions. We've been best friends ever since.

I have met many great people doing signings. One from last summer owned a tanning salon. I have free tanning for ever now. I offer to pay, and she says no way. Kinda cool.

Wow - I want one of THOSE! Wonder if we can specify the kind of customer we want - I'll choose attorney, tax adviser, hair stylist, escort, tanning salon owner, sugar-daddy, manicurist, doctor, etc. etc. etc.!! (And not necessarily in that order....)

Re: Another wants me to ...
I did a signing for an older lady about 3 weeks ago. Sad situation really. Her husband died about 10 years ago. They/she has lived in the house for 50+ years and it has been paid off for many years. She has two *adult* kids who won't work and are sponging off of her and have gotten her in financial trouble -- thus, the reason for the loan. She wants to hire me to make her will and a trust to protect herself from her own kids -- unlike Victoria Ring, I know that I'm unable to give legal advice and even though I have several will programs because of my attorneys, I think I will probably pass on the job offfer. Additionally, she says she trusts me and wants me to help her invest the loan proceeds to give her the best financial advantage. I'll probably pass on that one too, because I don't want to be responsible for losing or playing with someone else's money. I'm quite flattered that spending just two hours with her (most of the time occurred after after the signing), that she trusts me more than her own family to handle such important and personal matters.

Carolyn: Your elderly lady might well benefit from a Reverse Mortgage. Money coming in for the rest of her life. no money to repay and no one can kick her out even if she outlived her equity. Judy-Oregon Notary

Re: Another wants me to ...
Thanks, but a reverse is not for her because as long as the money was coming in, the adult children, who got her in financial trouble in the first place, would still be standing there with their hands out for their monthly take. They know nothing about this loan, and she is cutting them off. I certainly hope she sticks to her guns.

Friends with doctor's office manager.
Every 20 or so affidavits (which she gives me in piles of five to ten) I give her a nail/foot 'cure gift certificate. I have run into her at my favorite nail place.
It's the least I can do to keep her business.

I haven't made lasting friends but there are some great people out there! Not too many borrowers have made my F list. When you think about it, you are a total stranger with documents (almost everything about them is listed in the docs) meeting with total strangers. I wonder if they worry as much as we do about safety issues. Something to think about!

I have had a few really anal ENGINEERS look me up on the internet and make me show 2 forms of ID. Where do they think I got the docs, out of the air. But then I say to them, ok, now show me your ID and we laugh. As tough as this job can be at times, I have met some wonderful people and have had some great conversations and learned a lot. Some people have said if you are in the area please stop by and they mean it. I think.
