Nationwide Closing Services....

Okay, so I just tried to deposit a check from this company for a closing I did 30 days ago...(woohoo they paid on time).... however, the bank calls me back 30 minutes later to tell me the check might be fraudulent because it doesn't have certain "mica"? markings on it?

Its a National City check...not sure if that's common, but she was just giving me a heads up... we'll see if it clears and what happens.... anyone else had this problem?

MICA markings

are the magnetic numbers on the bottom of the check that indicate the bank's routing number, customer's account number and check number (and then usually the dollar amount of the check's transaction is added once the check goes through processing). That would be a strange circumstance that these numbers were missing, it would seem that the check could be fraudulent.

Did you keep a copy of the check? You could call the issuing bank to verify funds.

Hope it works out for you!

Re: MICA markings

My bank called me and informed me of what was up. She said it wasn't unheard of that they weren't printing on the checks, but very rare these days. The bank made a copy of the check, and will be monitoring its progress over the next few days to see if it clears/bounces/or comes back fraudulent.

This is not common but no unheard of. I had it happen with a check I printed, everything printed but the Mica at the bottom. I caught it before it went out. With a lot of companies using blank check stock and using software for checks I am surprised this hasn't happened more often.
