United Notaries Called

United Notaries called me yesterday to offer a signing for tonight (docs already overnighted to borrower). I checked them out here and saw message after message about payment problems with them. So I informed them that whenever a new company contacts me, I do a verification through the common notary sites and that they had a history of slow or no payment. They claimed there were two United Notaries: one in NV that has a history of payment problems, but they were in CO and had no such problems.

Still, I told them it was impossible to verify that through the information that I had and that I would consider their assignment only if they could arrange prepayment. I suggested a corporate credit card. They of course said "you have to do what you have to do" and said they could not arrange prepayment.

Of course, being new, trusting, and a bit of sucker about people being on the level with me, I am now second-guessing myself about their story. Also, being new, I hate to refuse business...but I also don't work for free. Did I do the right thing?

You do what you have to do this is "your business". I feel you asked the right questions, but I don't know of too many Pre-Pament companies.

I didn't actually expect them to pre-pay. I don't actually expect anyone to. But if I'm going to take a job from a company with THAT bad a history, that's the only way I would do it. I was just trying to find a way to work with them if they were interested.

Re: United Notaries Called - Slarty

Just an FYI, I have done a few jobs for them in the past and they have paid, but they are VERY slow in paying - almost 60 days for each.

I have taken many assignments from companies that have been posted with bad reputations, and have had no problems being compensated. This is something you have to find out for yourself. You don't know what the circumstances are behind these "no pay" or "slow pay" companies. Sooner or later in this business one is bound to be burned but that is the chance you take.

I totally agree. I took an assignment for a company that I later found out was on someone's "no no" list. Since I had already agreed to the assignment, there wasn't anything I could do. Turned out that they met my fee and paid within two weeks!! In addition, I have done a second job for this company and again they met my fee and paid within two weeks. Someone once said that one person's trash is another person's treasure. I totally agree! You need to use your own judgement sometimes and hope for the best.
