computer fax disabled by dsl service

Have not seen any topics on this subject.
I have SBC DSL and cannot send/receive faxes using my computer.
SBC tech support tells me that they cannot help, that using my computer's fax while on DSL is not possible.
Anyone out there have any way to help?
Thank you very much
Dan

I don't know what they're talking about. I had SBC DSL until December and I did use my fax on the same line, so it is possible. Make sure that you have the filter on the line, that may be the cause of your problem.
Good luck..

thanks for replying. I have the filter and it is connected to my modem via the dsl slot. Any more insight would be of GREAT interest. I have been on Dell tech support for over two hours now.
Sincerely

Swap the filter with another one. I've had bad filters which cause all kinds of havoc.

Redsebring said "I have the filter and it is connected to my modem via the dsl slot".

Your connection should be like this:

1. DSL line to modem, ethernet cable from modem to your computer.
2. fax line from phone jack directly to a dsl filter then to your computer.

If you have only one telephone jack on the wall, you should get a splitter. One ext. goes to the dsl modem and the other to the computer.

Thank you for responding,Becky.
I do have the splitter with a phone jack and a dsl jack.
The modem is connected to the dsl jack and I have hooked up the phone jack to the computer. The computer has two jacks(phone and line). which one do you use? My wife and I have been swapping and cannot tell which works. We have succesfully sent several test faxes, but with no way to tell until they have been sent (sent folder). we have a HP 1210 all in one that uses the Microsoft fax console program.
thanks again

the telephone cable should be plugged into "line" on the computer. If you'd like to give your fax number I can send you a test fax.

Ok...wait a minute. You are using an all-in-one printer/fax?

I use an all-in-one too. I have a telephone cord from the wall jack connected into "line" in the all-in-one (not to the computer). Since you are using DSL, you will need to connect the phone line to the dsl filter before connecting to the printer/fax. The only connection between my printer/fax to my computer is a USB cable or perhaps you may have a serial printer cable.

You should have a manual that came with the printer/fax showing you how to do the connection. If all else fail, you can contact HP tech support. They would be likely to be able to help you than the company who provided you the DSL service.

You are so very kind,Becky! My wife and I did figure out a way to get the pc fax working, but we only have the one phone line and cannot tell if the incoming is a phone call or a fax. so,we are going to break down and get a stand alone laser fax machine. our all in one is not an actual fax,it scans the fax and sends it via our computer.
Thanks again.
