license
Should I call them to tell them to make a copy of their driver's license?

Yes. If they can't, they can often fax a copy to their lender within the 3-day rescission period.

I only ask for DL photocopies if my order form lists it as a requirement. Should I be asking for photocopies on all signings?

I do as a normal course of confirming the appt. Often, you won't know if you'll need to get copies until you open the package and read the closing instructions. Then, it may be too late. So, I just ask for them. If I need to include them, I'm ahead of the game. If not, it gets shredded.

That's a real good suggestion!

I am trying to make it a habit, so I also just ask for them whether they are requested or not. However, instead of shredding it, I simply send it with the pkg. Incorrect? Mysti

People on this site have talked about taking photo of the DL. How many actually do this? I like the idea of letting them fax it to the title co. within the 3day recession period.

I use it every time. Just an added service.

Re: digital cameras
IMHO the best way to get more business is to present one problem-free package after another to the hiring entity. If I can control a problem, it will not be a problem...therefore, I always use a digital camera and return a copy of the ID. I do not disagree with other opinions stated here that do not run parallel to mine. This is just my philosophy.
It's easy for me to snap a picture with a digital camera. No package is ever without a copy of the ID if it is called for. 90% of my packages call for a copy of the ID. I think it has benefitted me to do this.
I have called lenders/title companies from the field and asked: If I drop the package today, I will have to fax the ID in. Which would you prefer...a package dropped with the ID to follow, or a delay until tomorrow for me to drop with the ID? They have always chosen the option of the next day drop to have the package complete upon receipt.
Again, just my experience.

Re: digital cameras
Melissa- understand that there are a few signing agents who will take a digital camera with them to the signing. If the lender/title company is requesting a copy of the DL, then I will inform the borrowers when I call them that they will need copies of their license. If I get there and they haven't got the copies, even though they have been asked to get copies, then I tell them they need to contact the company and arrange to fax over copies, otherwise funding may be delayed. I do not see it as my responsibility to babysit the borrowers. If they want the loan, they will comply with the lenders request. If it is impossible for them to get copies then they need to work it out with the lender.

I agree with you, put the monkey on their back to get their ID's copied. Copies are too easy to make, grocery stores have them, let alone all the copy places.

Re: digital cameras
On my initial call to Borrowers I always advise that I will need copies of dirvers licenses to return with loan package. If they fail to follow my instructions, it's not my responsibility to take a digital photograph of thier license(s). Why?--(1) because we are all adults; (2) because of identity theft, I don't want a copy of their drivers license/drivers license number on my card/computer and responsible for erasing each once I print the picture(s); (3) driving home, downloading the picture(s) and printing the pictures takes *me* a lot longer than had the Borrowers simply photocopied it in the first place.
My Palm Pilot also takes photos, but still, it's not my place to do something the Borrowers have been instructed to do!

I think it is incorrect simply because you are adding something that isn't being requested. AAMOF (As A Matter Of Fact), some lenders specifically state NOT to copy the ID.
When "mail aways" are returned to the title office, the processor may simply discard the unwanted ID copies in the trash, not in the shredder. So, I don't give them the possibility of making that mistake.
