This is a good question, is there a place for ss to make comments on us?

IMHO

Some, if not all, SS make notes on SAs. Just like we don't want to work for fly-by-night SSs, they are in business and don't want to work with poor quality SAs. I'm sure notes and ratings are internal.

The laws on libel and slander (never can remember which is which ) get into the equation. Also, anti-trust laws etc. I would think that companies keep the info on SA ratings internal or else they probably would be breaking the law or exposing themselves to libel/slander charges.

So is this "quiet period" normal? Or is it just busier 15th & 30th?

I would expect as you start out (and I am relatively new also) that you will see more variations. As you grow your relationships with the signing services and the title companies it will probably get to be more predictable. It is impossible for me to say what is "normal" for your area, but if you're just starting out then fluctuating business is perfectly normal for any new venture.

Hello,

I have been a notary since early 2003. Until just recently I decided to work with signing companies. Beforehand, most of my work was from local residents and clients.

Since I've started to work with signing companies I've acquired the following knowledge; At the end of the month I am guarenteed to get at least 7 calls a week for various notarial services. At the beginning of the month, I'm lucky to get 3-4 calls a week.

Of course my knowledge is just my expirence. Every part of the world is different. Business depends on a few basic factors (1) your states population; (2) the number of notaries in your area/state (God help California!! LOL); and (3) your reputation you must build with the companies.

Yup... thanks to the NNA!!

In Massachusetts only about 190,000 notaries exist with a population of approx. 6.5 million people. Which I think is great! Our Governor (Mitt Romeny) I guess used his head and decided to keep the number of notaries limited.

My friend just applied, but his appointment was denied with a letter stating that Massachusetts is not appointing notaries public at this time.

IMO I think all states should have a set number of commissioned notaries.

Re: Yup... thanks to the NNA!!

This month has been great for me. It's not that I've had a lot of closings but they have been paying great. I have been bringing in around the same amount of money each month for the past year or so...and I've hit that number in the middle of this month instead of the end. No complaints here.

Re: Yup... thanks to the NNA!! For what it's worth.

I think this idea probably has merit. I would also like to see some more professionalism, education, etc. Needless to say there have been improvements. When I got my first commission in 1974, all I had to do was fill out the paperwork and send it to the state. For what it's worth

Indiana is still that way, believe it or not. (At least it was when I became a notary)

Some companies have "2" end of months or their month ends on the 15th. That's why the 2nd & 4th weeks can be busier than the 1st & 3rd.

Hope this helps. It will pick up next week for you.

# of Notaries in CT

Last year there were over 53,000 CT notaries public, add to that every attorney and Judge can perform notarizations and certain police officers.

Just call the Notary Public Unit of the CT Secretary of State's office and ask. I haven't bothered this year, but they know the number .... it is increasing rapidly with the influx of people who want to become NSAs.

Most of the signings I do the borrower's wife inquires about how to do this part time - all of them have internet access and know how to do a google search. Simple test, $60 commission fee and you are on your way to a part-time NSA career.

Independence does not guarantee a set amount of money or signings. You should spend the slow times marketing. Sign up with every SS you come across. There are several listed on the Signing Services tab of NotRot. I suggest you become a Premier Member of NotRot and 123Notary.com where not only SAs and TCs will see you, but also individuals needing general notarizations.
