Ever turn down a job due to
the location? I got a call yesterday and the borrowers lived in an area of town that I would be scared to drive through during the day let alone at 8:00 at night. I feel bad and am hoping they will still call me for future signings.

I should think you could even tell the ss or title why, and perhaps an alternative location can be used for the signing. Better safe than sorry.

Did a signing at 8 pm a few nights ago in a rough neighborhood. Next day the loan officer called and asked how bad it was. Turns out part of his fraternity hazing was to be dropped off in that same neighborhood at night.

You did right
There is a town in my coverage area that I will not go to. I have traveled all over Europe by myself for years. I am not afraid: I am careful.
I explain that the cops told me not to go there because of the meth houses and car-jackings.
I offer to meet the borrowers at a Denny's (or similar) in a nearby town.
I have never been given grief about this.
But even if a particular TC never calls me again, my safety is worth any amount of income loss.

If the borrower will agree to meet you, a signing can be done almost anywhere that you can find a table. I've even completed a signing at KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken)!!

Re: alternative locations for signings
Besides KFC I've done signings in: library, Denny's, Highway rest stops, McDonalds, construction trailer, on a boat, waiting room of an airport. There are a few companies that insist that the signing be done at the property location.

There are a number of options- I would probably have just said "I'm sorry I already have an assignment for that time and I can't take the assignment. Please call me for future jobs." There is no static over already having an assignment because everyone knows it's the end of the month. Even if it's not the end of the month SS's understand "already having an assignment".
If it's a SS or TC that you have worked with in the past you and have a good relationship with then you can opt to be truthful and tell them that the neighborhood is a little rough or undesirable and you won't go at night. They may be willing to work you be seeing if the borrower will meet you or they may try to get another notary. I have friends that live in ROUGH areas in DC and they don't think their area is bad! So, telling someone that a notary won't come to your home because you live in a bad neighborhood may not work.
Handle the situation the way you see fit but YOUR SAFETY is MOST important.

Yeah, I"m not the only one who's completed signings at some DIFFERENT locations.
I have signed at the library, golf course, mall food court, Burger King and at a furniture store (borrowers employer).

Re: Meat packing plant signing
Yesterday I did one at a Meat packing plant using the back of my SUV for the table. Borrower had his big rig waiting to take off up north. Besides being smelly and windy, the flies bit the heck out of my ankles and feet. But thank God for the shade tree I parked my car under.
