Need EIN help!
I have tried three times to get an EIN from the IRS website. Each time I try to complete it it give me an error message and says I must complete a new form! I followed the instruction sheet but I am still confused about some of the items required.
Do I put "starting a new business"? and if so what type of business? Or do I put "other", or "proprietor"........
That entire application confuses me! And I have filled out PLENTY of applications before!
Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks!

Does it highlight in red anything that needs to be corrected?

Hi James,
Thanks for responding. No, it does not highlight anything in red or any color. There in lies my confusion. I don't know what I entered incorrectly.

It may be timing out on you if you are taking too long. Also, don't include anything like hyphens or commas in the company name.

James,
Did you have to put "starting a new business", or "proprietor"? Do you remember?
Thanks,
Pam

Then you should indicate that you are starting a new business on line 9 and on line 8a check Sole Proprietor and enter your Social.

I will try that. Do you know if you have to fill out the line about wages or number of employees? I don't have either so I did not fill out this information. Also when it came to the lines about describing the principal activity of your business I checked " other" and put Notary Public, but maybe I should have checked Finance and Insurance, I just wasn't sure. For principal line of merchandise sold I put Notory Public also. I guess this was all wrong.

Where it says highest number of employees expected, just enter 0 for all three.

And if I remember correctly, there is the line that says you must give the reason for your applicatioin, this is where I was confused. At first I put "starting a new business" and then for type of business I put was "Notary Public", then when I received the error message I changed it to "other" for reason instead of "starting a new business" and put "Notary Public " for type of business again.

On line 14, you can check OTHER and type in business services
On line 15, you can type in BUSINESS SERVICES or MOBILE NOTARY

Thanks!
You just answered my other two questions! Thanks for the help! I am going to try this! I did not think the questions that did NOT have an asterisk needed to be answered so I did not answer #s 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 12 or 13, correct? Especially since these were not applicable to me.

You will need to answer 7a and 7b, 11, 12 and 13

Hi James,
I thank-you so much for your help.
For number 11, if I put the month of Dec for the "closing month of accounting year" and for number 12 the first date wages will be paid,Oct 31st, 2005 , do you think this would be ok? Since I don't anticipate any wages before then.
I know this is a lot of your time and I really appreciate it, but for some reason this application just through me for a loop!
I hope in the future I too can return such a favor to a "newbie" like myself!

James,
Thanks so much for your hlep. I did try using all the corrections but it still would not go through. I think there must be something wrong with the site and I will call them tomorrow.
However, thanks to you and your time, at least I understand what is needed with this form now!

Thanks again!!

Call the IRS ...
You'd be better off calling the IRS and filing for an FEIN with an agent. The agent cannot advise, but may give you better choices based on your explanation of the business you are starting. For example, it doesn't appear you will be hiring any employees with your new business. Notaries Public do not sell supplies or materials.
Most Notaries Public are public officials who don't need an FEIN; notary fees are not subject to self-employment tax and can be listed on your regular income tax return.
If you plan to become a Notary Signing Agent, Witness Closer, or mobile notary and charge fees beyond what a Notary is allowed by law, then you need to describe your new business other than "Notary Public." This is where talking with an IRS agent who can help you determine which answer is the best answer for your purpose in getting a FEIN.
Don't forget to check with your State business regulating agency to see if you need to pay any fees or complete any forms with them. For example, permits, local business fees, or filing a "doing business as" trade name certificate.

Re: Call the IRS ...
I called the IRS and it took no time to set up my EIN. It took longer to wait for help then to actually answer the agents questions. I was given a number before I hung up the phone. I told him that my business was a Mobile Notary Service; which covers the whole business field that I am expanding into.

Re: Call the IRS ...
EIN :== Employer Identification Number. It is used as an alternative to a Social Security Number, and is discussed frequently here as a way to avoid exposing ourselves to risk of identity theft.

Re: Call the IRS ... Mary
Mary Get yourself an EIN number and give that out to signing companies etc, instead of your SSN - some protection against ID theft
