To Register or Not To Register

In the never ending circle of marketing here's what happened today. I e-mailed a ss for registration information. They sent it. As I'm reading through it I saw that the fee for 1 loan package was $50, edocs $25. You know if they offered that for a HELOC that was within 5 minutes from home sure I'd take it. But no way would I take $75 for a refi of 120 pages 15 miles away. So at this point the registration pack is just gonna sit there.

My thoughts on this tend to be... I would go ahead and register with the company. If and when they call, you can always state what *your* fee for that particular signing.

Is it slow in Riverside too Melisa?

Well, 'slow' is kind of relative. :-)

I've been a little busier than usual. I've just recently started doing edocs, so I've been getting more calls. I was hoping to start out my big edoc career with some easy HELOC's, but these have all been monster refi packages.

Are you in Riverside, also?

Joseph,

Do you speak Spanish, by any chance? I've been getting a few calls lately for a Spanish speaking notary, and I would love to be able to refer them.

Thanks,

Melissa

hey Joseph and Missy I lived in Riverside for over 20 years. We moved to the High Desert a year ago. I checked realtor.com out of curiosity to see how the prices had gone up and just about puked. There was a house on our street on the other side of the park in the older phase of homes going for $420,000.

home prices

Yes...it's pretty much insane out here now. Thankfully, we moved out here about 2 1/2 years ago.
The bright side of all this growth is that Riverside County is finally getting some decent shops and restaurants. When we moved here from South OC, I couldn't even find a Starbucks! I had to drive to Brea or back to South Coast to hit a Pottery Barn. Talk about deprivation! ;-)

I heard that high desert prices have been skyrocketing, also. It used to be one of the last affordable places to buy a home in So Cal...not so, anymore?

Re: home prices

Starbucks, right across the street from the Galleria (or the Tyler Mall as us oldies would call it). What I miss is Don Jose's. Yes if we wanted to sell right now we could get double what we paid. I glad we didn't wait to buy because in the first 4 months it went up enough to price us out of being able to buy. That and rents out here are insane, nieghbors were paying almost $300 more a month in rent than our house payment and they had 1 less bedroom than us.

While it can't hurt to register with the company, the odds of a $50 company agreeing to pay more than that are pretty slim. With so many signing services out there, why waste time signing up with the ones that you're probably never going to accept work from?

You can always cross out their fees and subsititute yours, that way if they call you, they know what your fees are.

I guess it depends on how big the registration package is. I've had discussions with companies that list $50 as their 1 loan package fee and advised them that the fee was too low. They responded to please register, that I can always negotiate the fee when they call. If the registration package is easy to fill out, go ahead and send in. If it's large, then don't.

PS: Of course, I haven't had any luck negotiating "up" with a $50 SS!!

yeah! you turned down a $50 signing appt. well just to inform you that when you turn those $50 down the signing service that called you will inform other signing services not to use you ever again. so yeah $50 dollars sucks but sometimes you have to eat your pride in order to get some more work. all the signing companys use the same websites to find there notary's and they talk too. just an FYI.

I don't think signing companies go out of their way to let other signing companies know about notaries that turn down $50 signings.

Trust me, they don't!

Luis, you are so full of it!
I used to, at one time, accept signings from the company you work for, as long as it was in my immediate area - FASS would not approve more than $50 - although they did when they were desperate! - so I stayed in my own immediate area.
Then I read where they started "hand holding" so I turned down all other signings from them.

If they paid more than the measly $50 they would be able to get more experienced notaries and cut out the hand holding!

Luis,

A wise man once said,

"It is better to remain quiet and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

Sadly, it is obviously to late for you, but you may want to pass the wisdom on to your friends.

Why do so many people assume that those of us who ask for higher fees are just sitting and waiting for the phone to ring? I've made over $3300 this month already by doing a total of 37 signings and have greatly enjoyed the large amounts of free time I've had. I suppose I could have tried to double my workload and make the same amount of money by accepting a bunch of $50 signings, but I kinda prefer my way thankyouverymuch.

Oh here's the icing on the cake of marketing I called a different ss yesterday who told me that they wont hire anyone until they have well over 50 signings under thier belt or a years experience. And guess what thier base fee was once you had enough experience to work for them, $50. I just want to get my 50 signings in so I can start marketing to title co's and lenders directly. $50 is barely enough to get a new notary out the door considering the prep time you take being new. I fought the urge to laugh at her and tell her what a rip it was. I just said "thank you and have a nice day".

The registration package is 25 pages long with around 10 to fax in. It's still in my e-mail collecting cyber-dust. So on to the next one.
