Denny's. a good or bad idea?

I searched for Denny's signings but didn't find much. The bo wants to meet at the local Denny's to sign and I agreed. I seem to remember some discussion about such location. I can't recall if people thought it was a good or bad idea. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Btw. the docs are 145 pages (about 127 of them legal). I don't know if that means anything. Thanks.

I have done signings in restaurants before.
When the waitress comes, I just tell her that we have some papers to sign first, and then I will be ordering, they are usually fine with that. I won't order until all the docs are signed and put away. I would hate for something to get spilled on them.

I'm doing a signing at a Burger King tomorrow night. If you sit at a place where you are served, you may feel pressured to order something, then take a chance of spilling something. I try to do the fast food places if I have to or a coffee shop.

I've done several "restaurant" signings. Works out great.

Those states that give lists of what is or is not acceptable ID never mention access to a building, but when the borrower actually is in the building described in the documents does help to establish the identity of the borrower, even if the state law does not give credit for it. (I don't mean to say access to the building is sufficient by itself; it just helps).

what does this have to do with Denny's?

Did you reply to the wrong question?

Re: what does this have to do with Denny's?

Suppose I wanted to get a mortgage on a place I didn't own, and didn't even have a key to. Naturally I would want to meet the notary some place other than the place named in the mortgage documents. Of course, there are other ways to guard against this, and I am well aware that many, if not most, real estate related notarizations occur away form the place being named in the documents.

Starbucks is usually a better choice than a sit down restaurant, but if the borrower wants to meet at Denny's it's no big deal. I've had borrowers eat lunch while signing docs.

Re: Denny's. IMO, a bad idea?

I won't do a signing at any food establishment. I've had two bad incidents and won't do it again. There are other places that work just fine. Public libraries, some Kinkos and other copy centers have small rooms and my all time favorite, at title companies. As you make your rounds introducing yourself to the local title companies, often you can "borrow" a closing room every now and then. Just today, I did a signing for a couple from out of town. They didn't want to do it at their son's house so I said I would find a neutral place and called a title company I do with business with. They in turn called that branch and set it up for me. I show up, introduce myself the to the office manager and everything went swimmingly. Borrowers were pleased as punch and I was floored when the office manager offered to make the copies of the borrowers licenses and provided coffee, on a tray. The best signing I've had in a long, long time. (And the LO told me these people were 'difficult'.)

Re: Denny's. IMO, a bad idea?

I have to agree with Paul. I have done signings at Denny's and at the very least there are glasses of water on the table (to be spilt???). I prefer a library (many have small study rooms) or even a Starbucks, McDonalds, Wendy's, etc. I also prefer if we don't meet at lunch time when they are the most busy. Some times I've had the borrower want to meet at Denny's, Big Boy, etc., they come in, sign the papers, get up and walk out without buying anything or even offering to leave a tip for the waitress, leaving it up to me to shell out money for the poor waitress who had a table taken up by a group of free loaders. So all, in all, I feel a table service restaurant is NOT a good idea and should be used only as a last result!!

After reading the responses, I changed the location.........

to a nearby coffee shop. I do, however, like the idea of the library. I haven't been to the t/c's so I wouldn't feel comfortable asking that of them just yet. Thanks for all the input.....
