On A Sunday

I know alot of us do closings on the week-ends, which means we're lucky if we get Sunday off. I received a call to see if I do a closing about 16 miles from me on SUNDAY at 1 pm. The pay? $40.00. (I'm sure you can all guess who THAT was). I told 'em I need at least $60.00...it is SUNDAY, afterall. Called me back adn told me supervisor wouldn't approve my fee. I told 'em "Good luck trying to find a closer on a Sunday for $40.00".

Think of it this way. There's a good hurricane movie on Sunday night (Cat 7) so you can watch it now instead of spending $$$ in gas, plus printing fees.

I really am beginning to wonder if they really do find people to do those $40 signings. I imagine the shopping process they go through, down a list, calling 3, 4, maybe 5 SA's. They'll hear a variety of responses to their offer - from loud hysterical laughter to the non-commital "sorry, I'm booked."

It's all about negotiation - the skill of negotiations on their side and ours. We're looking for the highest end - that's the equal counterpart to them looking for the lowest end.

My point is - don't assume the first offer is in stone; don't assume someone else is only getting $40 to do it, and use these calls to practice your negotiating. At least that way, you're getting something positive out of it =)
