Nations Direct is another one. I just give them my price and if they don't agree, I say thanks for calling and hang up. I can only hope they get someone to do it for $50 and then stiff them. If enough people say NO....eventually, they'll go away.

When I see: Nations Direct, Precision Closing, Speedy, The Final Step; I dont even waste my air minutes on them. I just dont answer the call, they dont even leave a voice mail they just go to the next list of notaries in the area.

Re: I got a call from a company to do a closing for...
Nations Direct usually offers me $40.00, I say no not enough They say they will call other notaries and call back if they cannot find one. That's when I have fun, I tell them the price is only good for this moment if you call back you can expect a higher price. They never call back

Re: I got a call from a company to do a closing for...
My favourite is the company that called me a few years ago for a signing. I quoted them $65 (this was when my base fee for SS was $50, and it was out of my base area) They wouldn't pay $65 and said they would have to find someone else.
So, a couple of days later they call me again with the same signing and agree to my $65. I go to do the signing, and what had happened earlier is they got a notary from Orlando (about 60 miles away - so 120 mile RT) to do the signing for $50. Notary arrived at borrowers, docs were supposed to be Fedexed direct to borrower, but when Fedex delivered he was in the back yard mowing the yard and didn't hear the Fedex, so they didn't leave the docs. Notary returned to Orlando without completing the signing (no docs, no signing), and she wouldn't return on another day. So, company would have had to pay her for going to do the signing, at least a trip fee, and they had to pay me the $65 for actually doing the signing.
If I had the signing the initial date, I would have called first to make sure the borrower had the docs, and rescheduled for later that day when he could pick up the docs (or I would have been willing to pick them up as I had to go by the Fedex office to get to his address)

Someone is saying yes to the $40-$50 fee
Happens around here too, don't think they are taking $40-50 dollars but they must charge less then me.

Re: Someone is saying yes to the $40-$50 fee
Let them have it !! The saying is true...You get what you pay for ! There have been many posts about Nations Direct offering $25 to fix other Notaries errors. I took a deal today for $125 w/e-docs and the SS complained, but agreed....after I got the HUD, I find that they're charging over $375 including closing fee, notary fees and courier fee. Now, if I have it correctly, I'm the courier, in addition to being the Notary...so if you think I charge too much...go to blazes...and get a $40 Notary to mess up your deal. Let's face it...when it comes to SS business, we, the Notaries are doing virtually ALL the work !!

Speaking of Citibank -- a couple came to my home the other day, papers in hand, and Citibank had instructed them to find their own notary to do the closing. Nice huh?

This has always been a shoddy operation. He charges a lot and pays notaries s***. Believe me I know we used to call him when I was with a title co. Once we figured him out we started hiring notaries direct. If you can just say no, in the end we will all benefit. These signing services really do take advantage of all the newbies who say oh I'll give him a chance. Just look at the new postings of people being stiffed by the same companies that were stiffing people 2 years ago. HELLO!!!!

I'm gonna be honest and not post anonymously because I'm not afraid of the criticism I anticipate after I post this message. I DO take the $50 closings right now because business is extremely slow for me. I agree that if the signing is like 40 miles and they're not giving you a reasonable fee, then of course one would say NO, because there's probably no profit in it whatsoever. These $50.00/$75.00 closings are really close to me anyways.
I'm a part time notary right now because I have a crappy 9-5, so excuse me for not having the whole day to do work. I just turned 22 a week ago and I'm in $50,000 debt, for many reasons I won't bore anyone with right now. Stupidity is one of them. But any dollar helps. I'm trying to go after title companies to be able to charge more, but without the experience most companies don't call you or pay you more. Especially since I can only do evening and weekend closings.
But I do greatly appreciate NotRot because I have received several calls from title companies where I can charge at least $100-$125 for nearby closings. Please don't criticize those who do appreciate any business. I believe I am an awesome notary. I used to work at one of your favorite $50 companies that was mentioned above, so I gained a lot of experience there, but for now there's only the dream of being able to get $400 per signing like some of you notaries get. One day it WILL happen! Don't forget, most of us have been in the same shoes at one point. Not all of us were handed business; I'm sure almost all of us worked very hard for it. We learn a lot from what we are given and not given, and we should be thankful for that.

Re: Kisco
Kisco states *but for now there's only the dream of being able to get $400 per signing like some of you notaries get.*
Don't believe EVERYTHING that you read, especially a post where someone gets $400 *per* signing. When reading this forum, or any other for that matter, take many posts with a grain of salt. There is a lot of misinformation floating around out there. You *must* use your own judgment in interpreting the truth and the crock -- very similar to wealthy people don't have to say how much money they are worth. It is possible that someone *could* get $400 for *one* signing, but the circumstances for doing so aren't routine, i.e., travel distance/time in addition to being a piggyback; holiday; late night signing; last minute EOM with no advance notice.
If you read or hear something that sounds too good to be true, it is.

Or, in other words... "Cream may rise to the top, but certain types of sewage float too" :-))
Good for you for not posting anonymously. Everyone has had to start somewhere, even if they dont want to admit it. I still slide a couple of cheapies in here and there - small package, literally right around the corner, not at month end, for the right companies - meaning no faxbacks or other hassles, and timely payment. Its extra money I wouldnt have in my pocket otherwise, during a time frame I didnt have more profitable closings anyway.
The trick is to know when to take them and when to hold out for something better.

Thanks, everyone.
My very first signing was $350 (I wish they could ALL be like that!!!) so I do believe that it can be done
I keep in mind that saying I first heard in 9th grade: "Give me a fish, I'll eat for a day. Teach me how to fish, I'll eat for a lifetime."

Re: Kisco
I'm not disputing the fact that you got $350 for your first signing, or any signing for that matter, but there's more to the story than that -- What type of signing was it? How far did you have to travel? How long before the signing did you receive e-docs? Faxbacks? There's a whole lot that comes into the picture when quoting fees and getting the fees.
