Urgent questions for DC notaries
is there a limitation to the amount that can be charged per sigining???
I have a notary trying to charge $100 for a less than 5 mile drive for one document.
Is that acceptable??
please advise ASAP!!
thanks in advance!!!

I don't know about DC, but in CA we can only charge $10.00 per signature, but anything we want for travel fees. If you have one document to notarize you might want to drive to a local postal/copy shop that has an on site notary and have them notarize for the signature fee. Good luck.

Not from DC, but...
$100 for a single doc 5 miles away is very excessive anywhere. Look for other mobile notary options here on the Find a Notary feature of Notary Rotary, or take the document to your bank or local UPS/Kinko's store.

According to District of Columbia Law, Section 1-1213 (c). Fees:
The fees of notaries public shall be: (1) For taking an acknowledgement of proof of a deed or other instrument including the seal and writing of the certificate, $2 for each signature; (2) For administering an oath or for taking an affidavit, including the jurat and seal, $2; or (3) For any other notarial act, $2.
You need to ask the mobile notary what else is covered by the $100: time? travel? parking? copies?

That seems steep to me as well. Maybe the notary was confused about what you need singed. Maybe they are thinking a loan package? I agree with the post to ask for an itemization of what the addt'l charges are. Good luck!
