Why they want fax backs
Coming home from a closing in a very rural and isolated ( no cell reception) area today my car started acting up. Since I was in amish territory and knew they couldn't help me if I stopped, I kept going until I got to the nearest town. First ballpark was "maybe" something with the transmission. Judgement call time. Had 3 sets of doc's to drop, including the one I just did which required faxing some to the SS. Not knowing when I would have my car again and with a mechanic waiting to drive me the remaining 20 miles home I decided to go ahead and drop the doc's.
The SS was understanding about it ( Leading Edge) and in my attempt to reassure them that I had never made any errors with them I asked why they needed to have those doc's faxed in the first place. She indicated that while they do catch notary errors doing this, they need to have the doc's in the event there is a dispute with the lender or Title Co. They have their own copy of the doc's as they were signed at the table. Now I know I have seen refference's to doc's being changed after leaving the notary so I can understand this. Personally I don't mind doing the fax back... never have and in this case my payment will be delayed until after funding which is fine by me. Some things you have no control over and if there is a middle man with a copy of what and how it was signed at the table thats like insurance to me!.

I hope you get paid for faxing back. I wasn't for a long time and when I saw my first huge phone bill come in I just about fainted. Now, I always ask if they want fax backs and if so there is a charge. if they don't like it I tell them to find another notary who will do it for nothing and then I also tell them that we are professionals and we should get paid a professional fee for our services and part of that service is faxing back. They just don't want to "put out" any more money that will take away from their profit.

Always demand a fax back fee. I charge to fax even just one page. It cuts down on the garbage. If they want to babysit, let them open a daycare.

2 ways to look at it
I offer free fax, have toll free fax # free thru an online fax service, so my faxes are emailed. I have a brother MFC 8220 laser printer that very nicely scans ( and very quickly with the sheet feeder) the documents into a file on my computer which I attach to the email. The fax service converts it to PDF and sends it on as a regular fax. I get 200 pages free a month and additional pgs are .10 a page. It costs me $10 a month. I have no land line (which would cost a minimum of $40 a month). This was well worth it to me today as Global called me today looking for the fax back. I had done it last night and had the confirmation from the fax service. They had also called me last night oking the drop of doc's. I also had not deleted the doc's off my computer yet as I was running all day. I was able to provide them with a refax of their doc's. So my only phone is a cell. I have been doing it this way for about a month and it seems to working well. As for your phone bill, those long distance calls are tax deductable as are any business related calls on your phones. You just have to sit down every month with your phone bill and sort it all out from personal calls. My cell bill is also tax deductible as I use it for business 90% of the time.

How demeaning...you have to be ok'ed to drop off docs? I'm a professional. I will not be treated like an uneducated boob. Thank goodness my regulars don't treat me this way.
