brother 5170dnlt

I just got this printer and no matter what I do, the printer light blinks and acts like I am out of paper, I am ready to scream and brother is no help, does any one know what could be wrong??? TIA

Try putting in a different size paper. If it works then, you will need to specify, in your printers properties, which size paper is in which drawer.

see page 5 of manual. Is status light solid red or blinking? If solid red, may be just a piece of paper stuck someplace if not actually out of paper. Try swapping trays to see if a tray is the prob. Did you have a paper jam just before this? Answer and I'll try to help troubleshoot further. How long have you had printer, and how many reams of 500 have you printed so far?
Some tech support at Brother are mediocre (just like some SAs, lol) and others are EXCELLENT.
I've encountered both over the years. If all else fails. they should be able to help, call back. Ask for tech support, not just customer service.

I did have a paper jam, but got it all. The status light is red and the paper light blinks. I have switched paper in both trays and it does nothing. TIA

The jam was from the bottom tray and I got pieces. I have looked inside, done the wheel and I don't see any paper and can"t get any more paper

my guess is still a piece somewhere. try removing both trays, use a flashlight, look for any paper dangling. I've found paper jam ORIGINALLY occurs behind or in drum roller above and find second piece of paper there. open access door to drum roller/toner cart by depressing button on top front. pull out drum roller by putting finger tips under slightly lighter grey bar and pull staight out. if you find paper there pull it straight up and out by holding on left and right sides. reinsert D/R close door, good to go. try it. PS I'm a slow typist!

which tray do you use for legal? I use top tray, not bottom, as most of my docs seem to be printed on all legal or don't care. I amuse myself by thinking that the docs print SOOOO much faster because of the shorter paper travel. It's a game. Like life. got to get our jollies where/whenever we can. OOPS, sorry to go philosophical on you.

At this point I am not using either tray as my paper light just keeps blinking. I thought this would be so much better than my Hp3015. Not. Oh well tomorrow is another day.

I am so *****, I have looked like you siad and I can see no paper anywhere, it probably is there but it just doesn't show anywhere. My Hp3015 is so easy to unjam, I just got this Brother and I am so angry with it. I don"t know what to do, except give up and send it back, I just got it from PC Nation. TIA

I suggest try brother again. i've had multiple brothers for years, trouble free, easy to unjam, low cost to operate. 5170DNLT is one of two (5050LT) I currently have, plus brother laser fax which is 6 plus years old i used in another business, along with an older brother laser printer. Have loved 'em all, been happy with ease of use and low cost of operation. Your mileage may vary. Hope it looks better in morning. try again, or try brother. g' nite

I have a hl-5150dlt and I red here in notrot that place the legal size tray on top, but my machine
makes really funny noises like my hl1240 when it was about to jam, so what I did I switch the
letter size paper tray on top and the legal size paper tray in the bottom, and no more paper
jams.

I haven't had any problems with my Brother 5150DLT either. I have legal ppr. on bottom tray. Occasionally I'll need to reset the printer setup in Windows if docs are being downloaded from DynamicDocs or Swiftview.

The printer will print if it is not attached to the bottome tray. Once it is attached the paper light blinks. I have auto detected the 2nd tray and applied, but still keeps on blinking. I can detach from the bottom tray and restart the printer and it will print fine. I have legal on the bootm and letter on the top, I switched and doesn't seem to matter

If you recently got it from PC Nation, perhaps you could return it. Maybe they will send you a replacement and you can just return the one you got. It is a good machince, but it this was refurbished, perhaps they missed something. If a sensor is faulty, say a semiconductor chip, you are not going to find it. Thus, try working it out with PCNation.
