HP Laserjet 4+ paper jam problem
I would appreciate hearing of any fixes you have found for this problem. I have tried the solvent and it works for about 25 pages and then the jams start again.

How old is it, maybe it needs a general cleaning. How about the paper.? Maybe you need to upgrade the paper. (after the cleaning. )

I just bought it as a backup printer. It was reconditioned by the seller. Using 20 lb paper which is acceptable I was told.

Persistent jam is commonly associated with bad/old pick up rollers where the rubber rollers have lost it's tackiness to move the paper smoothly. A good roller is kind of soft and has a rough surface.

I agree with the previous suggestions about the feed rollers, I know that this will sound too simple, but having worked with paper feeding products for many years, I always take the paper out of the tray and while holding it bend the entire stack to allow air between the sheets and then hold one edge (lead edge) as if you are shuffeling cards and then replace into the tray. This will help alleivate those double feeds.

Pam on your printer
Consider getting a cheap new printer as a backup. Go to www.fatwallet.com and watch for one of the super sales on a printer with rebates. I had an HP4+ years ago. It is great, but it prints really slow. You can pick up a cheap 20page a minute Brother Printer(be sure to check the emulations and get one that emulates PCL). Donate the HP to a charity and take a tax deduction or sell it on Ebay. HP4p+ great, but slow.
