Hurricane Wilma can delay signings in Florida
Hurrican Wilma is supposely going to hit West of Florida and whiz through central, etc... well we know there is a big chance it will go through our area...more or less little lower or above...either way we will get hit somehow...or maybe not. I'm not letting it get to me...but you know the news...making a big thing about it.
what is getting to me...if this is so "serious" of the Hurrican, why are Lenders/Title companies having closings done on Sunday and Monday/Tuesday knowing we are going to be affected during that time???? Are they not paying attention to the news and the location of the hurrican???
I say this cuz I got an assignment for Sunday and Monday...I took them cuz I have this feeling we might get missed by the hurrican...but there is that chance that hurrican is going to hit us on Sunday no later then Monday. I advised the Title/SS about the hurricane. They seems to let it go over their heads...of course I joked about it the hurrican not hitting us. However, I don't want to the chance or look like I lack common sense by driving out in that storm. Even the borrowers think this is insane. Like no one at the Title companies are using any common sense. Well...I'd been so busy with closings today, doctor appointments and helping my disable son, so I didnt have the chance to call the borrower as quick as they wanted me too...after all i was out on an assignment when the call came through...well i got the nasty call that I hadnt called yet and wanted me to do so right away. i told her again I was at a closing it will have to wait till i got back home. but she was like u need to call now. however, i didnt have the confirmation/number on me, so i couldnt. I laughed abit afterwards cuz I got thinking that this hurricane is coming through so it might not matter anyhow.
Its NOT that I'm not serious, cuz I am about my work. However, due to the situation of my busy schedule for today and with darling Wilma coming into town, what can we really do anyhow? its like NO ONE else is seriously thinking how this area is going to be affected...its like our saftely is not even considered.
I don't want to be "punished" cuz i couldnt do something at the moment they asked. I'm not saying I can't do the closing...I can...however, think first before assigning closings for south/central Florida for Saturday, Sunday, Monday and possible Tuesday. Many Notaries I knw are refusing signings simply cuz they are using common sense due to the hurricane.
Am I crazy to feel or think this way or does anyone really care? Its not the money, cuz I do need it but I'm NOT putting my life or the life of the borrowers at stake cuz some title company or lender is NOT thinking of our situation during that time. If money is more important then lives, then they need to come live here and see what its like to go through this hell. I dont want to turn down assignments but I have thrown in my "disclaimer" and reminded them of the hurricane.
Any other suggestions? Advise?

1Stop,
Know this about title companies...they always will err on the side of "nothing bad will happen". No one can know the future. Acts of God happen, and that doesn't mean you didn't "do something" or will be punished.
Good grief. I might have to deal with an earthquake tomorrow. If that happened, all signings are off and that will be the least of my worries!
Take care of yourself, and good luck to you- the earth will NOT stop rotating on it's axis because your signing didn't happen.

But hon...the hurricane is something we all know is coming...earthquakes..that just happens and most times with NO warnings. At least it is known the hurricane is coming and gong to hit florida...especially this area.
What i'm saying, yes prepare the doc's however, don't sent it over night...wait till Monday or the day of the send it edoc. Cuz it will save them the paper work, the postage to ship and all they will have to do is change the date. I guess I"m just a penny pincher that I 'm just saying that if you know somethig is about ready to happen, find ways to save money and take the risk of "waiting" to be on the safe side then to go through the expense of printing, shipping and then the closing cancelled and guess what you just wasted inck, paper and shipping.
I know what you are saying...maybe its the "penny pincher" in me.
thanks for your response!

It's business as usual...either refuse or accept the assignments with your disclaimer and see what happens. Business does not stop to wait for something that may or may not happen, unless they are on shore and evacuated. Many times the loans are date sensitive for a variety of reasons... rate locks, borrowers needing cash outs by a certain date, etc.

Dee, here's some good news:
From MSNBC News Services:
"a slightly weaker Wilma could sit over Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula for two days and that landfall in Florida is now not likely until Monday — assuming Wilma even heads that way".
I hope you stay safe - you're right about at least having some warning - you're disclaimer is a good idea and no one (not even a title company) could blame you for the effects of yet another hurricane. I hope it misses all of you in the gulf coasts and no more loss of life or property.

Booking as usual here...
in St Lucie County. If Wilma hits us hard, then I'll let the TCs know. If she doesn't, then I'll continue on with my schedule as planned.

Me, too Melissa. If it hits here, needless to say, the appointments will be canceled by me and the brw. But in the event Wilma misses me here in SW FL, I will still have my appointments. I believe the SS's and TC's will understand if you have to cancel.

Re: Booking as usual here...
When Katrina hit west of us in Pensacola I was almost the only one around to still have internet access (DSL through the phone line). All cable access was down for 3 days min.
On Monday I recieved a call for a closing. I hooked up the 'puter and printer to the generator and started printing. I went to the signing as soon as the winds calmed down and it was safe. I wasn't the only one on the road. The Br's had no power so we went outside in the wind and started signing. Everything went well and I earned some big $$$ not to mention the rep of going above and beyond the call of duty. But really it helped the BR's the most because otherwise the would have lost there rate. Being on a fixed income they couldn't afford that. I was glad I could do it.
Keep in mind that Hurricanes are unpredictable and really it could stall and not hit until sometime next weekend. You just never know. I always tell the scheduler that if it hits I will get it done asap. After it is safe. And as soon as UPS, FEDEX etc. are up an moving again the paperwork will be on its way. They all have been understanding. Beverly

Re: Booking as usual here...
Ok...it makes me feel a little better that I'm not the only one who feels or thinks the same thing...I've been listening to the news and it does sound like it is getting alittle better. However, my monday closing just got rescheduled by the TC...on their part. At least it is still happening just not on the same day.
Sorry for the venting ...don't want to sound like a "whiner" (wink), but often hearing what others are thinking or feelings give me a better perspect of things too. I guess the anxiety often hits home! ya know what I mean!!
You all who are in florida...central or SW or SE ....please stay safe and have a good weekend!!!!
